Technology described in this document can be embodied in an earpiece of an active noise reduction (ANR) device. The earpiece includes a plurality of microphones, wherein each of the plurality of microphones is usable for capturing ambient audio to generate input signals for both an ANR mode of operation and a hear-through mode of operation of the ANR device. The earpiece further includes a controller configured to: process a first subset of microphones from the plurality of microphones to generate input signals for the ANR mode of operation and process a second subset of microphones from the plurality of microphones to generate input signals for the hear-through mode of operation. The second subset of microphones excludes a first microphone from the plurality of microphones located closest to a noise pathway of the earpiece.

Dynamic control of multiple feedforward microphones in active noise reduction devices

Technology described in this document can be embodied in an earpiece of an active noise reduction (ANR) device. The earpiece includes a plurality of microphones, wherein each of the plurality of microphones is usable for capturing ambient audio to generate input signals for both an ANR mode of operation and a hear-through mode of operation of the ANR device. The earpiece further includes a controller configured to: process a first subset of microphones from the plurality of microphones to generate input signals for the ANR mode of operation, process a second subset of microphones from the plurality of microphones to generate input signals for the hear-through mode of operation, detect that a particular microphone of the second subset is acoustically coupled to an acoustic transducer of the ANR device in the hear-through mode of operation, and in response to the detection, process the input signals from the second subset of microphones without using input signals from the particular microphone.

Aspects of the present disclosure provide an intentional leak from a rear volume of an ear cup to the atmosphere. The leak is created via a vent in the driver plate acoustic assembly. The vent reduces an acoustic load the ear cup cover creates on a rear cavity of an electroacoustic transducer contained within the driver plate acoustic assembly of a headset. Additionally, the vent is hidden on an assembled ear cup of a headset. Due to the placement of the vent, ear cup cover may have a smooth, seamless surface.

An earpiece of an ANR device incorporates one or more of feedforward-based ANR; feedback-based ANR; passive noise reduction (PNR) of environmental noise sounds in the environment external to the casing of the earpiece in higher audible frequencies; a controlled leak acoustically coupling the front cavity to the environment external to the casing of the ANR device where the coupling may be through another cavity that is closable to the environment external to the casing with a leaky cover; a combination of an acoustically resistive port and a mass port coupling a rear cavity to the environment external to the casing where the coupling may be through another cavity that is closable to the environment external to the casing with a leaky cover; a feedforward microphone given acoustic access to the environment external to the casing through an aperture that is overlain with a leaky cover or that is enclosed within a cavity that is acoustically coupled to the environment external to the casing with a leak.

The invention concerns an accessory () for coupling to a portable electronic device (). The accessory includes an interface () for coupling to the portable electronic device, an identifier () in which the identifier generates at least in part a parameter and at least one speaker (). Only if the accessory contains more than one speaker, the parameter generated at least in part by the identifier causes an audio amplifier () that drives one of the speakers to be activated. In addition, the parameter generated at least in part by the identifier can cause the audio amplifier to be deactivated if the accessory contains only one speaker.

Method and system for operating accessory controls

A stereo headset () with push-to-talk function can be interfaced with a wireless communication device () via a connector interface. The connector interface preferably includes a jack at the wireless communication device () and a compatible plug at the stereo headset (). An electrical contact () at the connector interface can contemporaneously interconnect both electrical audio signals between the wireless communication device () and at least one of the speakers of the stereo headset () and electrical user input signals from an external push-to-talk user input device () to the wireless communication device ().
