A lawn mower comprising a blade housing, an internal combustion engine being supported on the blade housing and including a crankshaft, an output shaft rotatably supported by the blade housing, the output shaft being operably connected to the crankshaft such that rotation of the crankshaft at a given rpm causes rotation of the output shaft at an rpm less than the rpm of the crankshaft, and the output shaft having a cutting blade fixedly mounted thereon and housed within the blade housing.

Disclosed is an internal combustion engine including a flywheel pulley connected to a crankshaft, a governor drive pulley, and a cooling liquid pump drive pulley with belt means driveably connecting the flywheel pulley, the governor drive pulley and the pump drive pulley. In one embodiment of this invention, the belt means is a belt and the flywheel pulley, the governor drive pulley, the pump drive pulley, an idler pulley and the flywheel pulley are driveably connected in series. The engine includes a cooling liquid system, a fan connected to the cooling liquid pump and a radiator adjacent the fan. The engine is a two-stroke engine and the engine crankshaft is in a vertical position. The flywheel is rotatable about a first axis and the governor drive pulley and the idler pulley are coaxial about a second axis at a right angle to the first axis, and the cooling liquid pump is rotatable abut an axis extending perpendicular to the first and second axes.

A carburetor is provided with a primer for aiding in starting an engine, the primer including a priming bulb for forcing air into the air space in the float bowl to cause the air pressure in the air space to be greater than atmospheric pressure and to cause liquid fuel to be forced through the fuel nozzle and into said fuel-air mixture passage of the carburetor. The priming bulb includes a flexible wall having a groove and a vent opening is located in the base of the groove and is positioned so as to close as the priming bulb is compressed and as air is forced into the air space of the float bowl. The carburetor also includes a narrow passage permitting the venting of a portion of the air forced into the air space of the fuel bowl by the priming bulb to thereby control the amount of liquid fuel injected into the carburetor venturi.

A two-cycle internal combustion engine includes a crankcase extending from a cylinder and supporting a horizontally extending crankshaft, a piston mounted for reciprocative movement in the cylinder along an axis generally perpendicular to the crankshaft axis, an air and/or fuel inlet on the crankcase including a flange disposed in a first plane extending generally parallel to the crankshaft axis and perpendicular to the piston axis and having a major axis extending transversely of the crankshaft axis, and a manifold having an outlet flange which is disposed in the first plane and has a major axis extending generally parallel to the major axis of the crankcase inlet flange and further having an inlet flange disposed in a second plane extending generally vertically and having a major axis which extends generally horizontally and is angularly related at a substantial angle to the major axis of the crankcase inlet flange. The engine further includes a float type carburetor having a vertically extending outlet flange which is connected to the manifold inlet flange and has a major axis, the carburetor float being operable to regulate fuel flow when the major axis of the carburetor flange is generally horizontal. In one embodiment, a throttle member for controlling the flow of a fuel-air mixture from the carburetor into the crankcase is pivotally mounted inside the manifold and movement of the throttle member is controlled by an air vane governor mounted on the manifold.

Disclosed herein is a lawn mower comprising a blade housing, wheels for supporting the blade housing for movement along the ground, a rotary cutting blade supported in the blade housing, and an internal combustion engine carried by the blade housing and rotatably driving the rotary cutting blade. The engine includes a carburetor and a movable throttle control for controlling fluid flow through the carburetor, the throttle control being movable from an open position to a flow restricting position. The engine further includes a movable air vane connected to the throttle control for moving the throttle control, a fan for impelleing air against the air vane so as to urge the throttle control to the flow restricting position, and a spring connected to the throttle control for urging the throttle control toward the open position.

An engine comprises a combustion chamber and a fuel delivery system which communicates with the combustion chamber and is adapted for connection to a fuel source. The fuel delivery system is operative for pumping fuel into the combustion chamber, and an ignition system is provided for igniting fuel in the combustion chamber. An ignition switch is operatively connected with the fuel ignition system and is operatively movable between an off position for preventing operation of the fuel ignition system and an on position for permitting operation of the fuel ignition system. A priming mechanism operatively connects the fuel delivery system with the ignition switch for operating the fuel delivery system to pump fuel into the combustion chamber simultaneously with movement of the ignition switch between the off position and the on position.

Disclosed herein is a lawn mower comprising a blade housing, a member adapted for rotation within the blade housing and having a peripheral edge, a blade movably secured to the member for movement between a retracted position wherein the blade is positioned inwardly of the peripheral edge, and an extended position wherein the blade extends outwardly beyond the peripheral edge, and a spring for biasing the blade to the retracted position in the absence of rotation of the member above a predetermined speed.
