There is provided a surgical coil fastener applier for use in applying helical coil fasteners in surgical procedures, such as hernia repair, to affix surgical mesh to tissue. The coil fastener applier includes a housing having a handle extending therefrom and a trigger pivotally mounted on the housing. An elongated tubular portion extends from the housing and includes a drive rod rotatably supported therein and slidably supporting a plurality of coil fasteners thereon. A drive assembly is provided within the housing to rotate the drive rod and coil fasteners. The drive assembly includes an anti-reverse mechanism to allow rotation of the drive rod in only one direction. An actuation assembly is provided within the housing to convert the motion of the trigger into rotary motion for supply to the drive assembly. The drive assembly includes structure to limit the amount of rotary motion supplied to the drive assembly. The drive assembly further includes a ratchet and pawl mechanism to prevent a partial cycling of the coil fastener applier. Also provided are various coil fasteners for use with the coil fastener applier.

A comparator is disclosed for examining, inspecting and/or calibrating component parts. The comparator includes a frame, a component supporting system releasably attached to the frame for supporting a component part to be inspected and/or calibrated, a video imaging system attached to the frame for generating a video image of the component part on a video display, a graphic line image generator for superimposing on a video display graphic images arranged to display and represent predetermined dimensional ranges related to the component part, whereby the component part may be compared to the predetermined images of the graphic images.

The present invention relates to a machine actuating system, which includes a hand actuator system which responds to the presence of at least one operator body part at a predetermined location by generating control signal and an actuator control system to actuate the machine in response to the control signal. Generally, the actuating system includes a pair of ergonomic support members, where one support member is configured and dimensioned for interactive association with the operator's left hand and the other support member is configured and dimensioned for interactive association with the operator's right hand, and a sensing system associated with each support member for sensing the presence of the operator's hands and generating the control signal.

A surgical staple remover has two pivotally connected arms, each of which is made up of a proximal handle piece and a distal nose piece. All four pieces are held together by a single pivot pin, and the handle and nose pieces of each arm interfit with one another so that both pieces of each arm pivot as a unit about the pivot pin. The nose piece of a first arm includes two, small, laterally spaced members which can be slipped under the backspan of a surgical staple to be removed. The nose piece of the second arm includes a single member which is initially between and above the two laterally spaced members. When the arms are manually squeezed together, the single member bends the center of the staple backspan down between the laterally spaced members and pivots the legs of the staple out of the tissue.

A hydraulically actuated power cylinder reciprocates a driver to exert a compressive force to upset a rivet with the power cylinder's movement being made to correspond to the movement of a pump cylinder by a fluid connection therebetween. The pump cylinder's movements are mechanically actuated according to a programmed cam and actuation is made to occur only during the riveting cycle by a control circuit operating a clutch and brake with the circuit inhibiting operation upon the sensing of a malfunction.
