Cooling means are disclosed for cooling the face panel of a projection cathode ray tube. The cooling means comprises a housing having a rearwardly extending flange with a forwardly tapering section configured to nest with the forwardly tapering section of the face panel when mated therewith. The housing has a window section for framing and passing the image formed on a cathodoluminescent screen on the inner surface of the face panel. Spacing means are provided for spacing the window section of the housing from the face panel window section, and bonding means provide for bonding and hermetically sealing the tapering sections together. A cooling medium is located in the space between the windows for cooling the face panel. The tapering sections provide for mechanically attaching the housing and the tube into firm exact adjacency for sealing, in conjunction with the bonding means, the housing to the face panel, and for physically supporting the tube in conjunction with mounting ears in the corner regions of the housing.

Liquid cooling in projection cathode ray tubes

A cathode ray picture has a neck terminated by a plurality of electrically conductive pins extending axially from the neck terminus. The tube is characterized by each pin having an electrically conductive wire attached thereto. A base in abutting relationship to the neck terminus comprises an insulative member filled with an electrically insulative adhesive. The base has a closed end facing away from the neck terminus. The base includes a plurality of apertures equal in number to the wires for spacedly receiving and passing the wires. The wires are electrically isolated one from the others by the spacing and the insulative adhesive, and the base is adhered to the neck terminus by the adhesive.

Means and method for making electrical connection to cathode ray tubes

An article of manufacture is disclosed for use in a projection television system. The article comprises a cathode ray picture tube having a funnel and a circular face panel with a rearwardly extending skirt and a window for receiving a cathodoluminescent imaging screen. The panel skirt is conjoinable with the funnel by mating along interfacing edges. The seal edge of the panel skirt defines a plane whose normal makes a non-zero acute cant angle with respect to the axis of the window. The funnel seal edge defines a plane whose normal makes a non-zero acute cant angle with respect to the funnel axis. The tube according to the invention is characterized by having a first pair of embossments on the funnel azimuthally spaced 180 degrees apart adjacent to seal edge of the funnel, and a second pair of embossments on the face panel skirt azimuthally spaced 180 degrees apart and adjacent to the seal edge of the skirt. The azimuthal position of the first and second pairs of embossment are predetermined such that the alignment of said pairs is effective to indicate the relative rotational position of the face panel and funnel and the predetermined tilt of the electron optical axis with respect to the projection optical axis.

Projection tube alignment means

Apparatus and method is disclosed for spot-knocking a cathode ray picture tube by beneficial arcing between selected electrodes of an electron gun sealed in the evacuated envelope of the tube. The invention is particularly useful in spot-knocking certain cathode ray picture tubes having a resistive arc-suppression means and static elimination system. The picture tube has an inherent capacitance that can store energy in an amount capable of inducing destructive arcing during spot-knocking. In one embodiment of the invention, a bipolar potential is applied across the electrodes to be spot-knocked, resulting in the amount of energy in the induced arcing, for a given applied potential, being very much less than would be the case if a unipolar potential were applied. Other embodiments include resistive means and spark gap means for discharging the voltage between lead-in pins before a destructive arc can occur therebetween.
