The selection of a candidate formation realization(s) from a plurality of formation realizations may be done with a classification and regression tree (CART) analysis taking into account petrophysical and geological properties. For example, a method may include applying a CART analysis to a plurality of formation realizations using a first formation property as a predictor in the CART analysis, wherein the plurality of formation realizations are for a second formation property and are based on at least one measured formation property, thereby yielding an association between the first and second properties for each of the plurality of formation realizations; analyzing a strength of the association for each of the plurality of formation realizations; and selecting a candidate formation realization from the plurality of formation realizations based on the strength of the association. The identified candidate formation realization(s) may then be used to develop the parameters of subsequent wellbore operations.

Classification and regression tree analysis of formation realizations

Methods, computer readable medium, and systems for mapping geologic features are described. In one example, a selection of a template describing a theoretical geologic depositional profile is received. In addition, paleo-elevations and/or paleo-depths of actual geologic facies in an actual geologic depositional profile are received. A graphical map that represents the actual geologic depositional profile is generated by mapping the received paleo-elevations and/or paleo-depths onto the theoretical depositional profile.

A method to generate a global grid may include storing at least one data structure representing a plurality of fault blocks associated with one or more faults in a geographic formation; selecting two fault blocks associated with a fault of the one or more faults; changing the position of a first of the two fault blocks in the at least one data structure representative of a shift of the first fault block towards the other fault block of the two fault blocks to position the center of gravity of a fault boundary of the first fault block with the center of gravity of a fault boundary of the other fault block; aligning the first fault block with the other fault block according to a permitted level of conflict between fault blocks; and updating the at least one data structure to indicate a merging of the two selected fault blocks.

The present disclosure describes systems and methods for performing stratigraphic modeling using production data density profiles. At least some illustrative embodiments include a production logging tool data processing method that includes measuring one or more characteristics of a formation within a borehole, of fluids within the formation or of fluids within the borehole, calculating a density profile of each of the one or more characteristics, and defining a boundary between two reservoir simulation cells based at least in part upon the density profile. The method further includes performing a simulation of a production field including the borehole using said simulation cells and presenting the simulation results to a user.

The creating may include: calculating a set of probabilities associated with a first horizontal location, each probability indicative of a likelihood of finding abutting geological layers; estimating a plurality of successions of geological layers to create a plurality of estimated successions, and the estimating using the set of probabilities; determining, for each of the estimated succession, a value indicative of how closely each estimated succession matches a measured succession, the measured succession determined by a seismic survey; and selecting from the plurality of estimated successions based on the values, the selecting creates a selected succession of geological layers, and the plurality of modeled values associated with the first horizontal location determined based on the selected succession of geological layers.

Methods and systems regarding models of underground formations

A model is created by distributing a plurality of points in the volume in the absence of a grid. Each point has a location. A first vector, having a length, a magnitude representing the value of the geological property in the neighborhood of the first point, and a direction representing the direction of maximum continuity, derived from a geological property in the neighborhood of the location of the first point, is assigned to a first point of the plurality of points. The direction of maximum continuity is the direction along which the magnitude of the geological property stays substantially the same for the greatest distance when moving away from the first point. The length of the first vector represents the distance from the first point in the direction of the first vector that the magnitude and direction of maximum continuity of the geological property stay substantially the same.

At least some embodiments are methods of determining an underground surface or horizon including: identifying an occluded zone residing between a first and second faults, the occluded zone not penetrated by an actual borehole, and the first and second faults intersect an expected location of the surface; calculating a fault throw for the first fault; and calculating the underground surface using the fault throw. Calculating the fault throw may include: calculating a first pseudo depth at a first end of the first fault, the calculating the first pseudo depth using at least one actual depth value that resides across the first fault from the first end; calculating a second pseudo depth at a second end of the first fault, the second end distinct from the first end; and determining the fault throw using the first and second pseudo depths.
