The invention relates generally to genes that encode proteins that inhibit axonal growth. The invention relates specifically to genes encoding NgR protein homologs in humans and mice. The invention also includes compositions and methods for modulating the expression and activity of Nogo and the NgR proteins. Specifically, the invention includes peptides, proteins and antibodies that block Nogo-mediated inhibition of axonal extension. The compositions and methods of the invention are useful in the treatment of cranial or cerebral trauma, spinal cord injury, stroke or a demyelinating disease.

Antibodies to Ret and RetL3

Isolated nucleic acid and amino acid sequences for Ret ligands are disclosed. Ret ligands encoded by the isolated nucleic acid sequences of the invention have a hydrophobic N-terminal signal sequence, a hydrophobic C-terminal sequence and a phosphatidylinositol glycan linkage motif. Vectors and host cells that include Ret ligands encoded by the isolated nucleic acid sequences of the invention are also disclosed.

The label may be attached to the 5' terminus of the probe, or to modified bases of the probe. Probes constructed according to the invention are useful in detecting target sequences in genomic DNA.
