A thermal battery having improved performance under spin comprises an aligned stack of annular cell elements, including a combustible composition that forms a conductive ash on burning, forming a toroidal cell stack. A sheet of nonporous electrical insulating material such as mica tightly engages the outer peripheral surface of the cell stack and the central hole of the stack is filled with electrical insulating fuze material.

A thermal deferred action cell comprising a first metal electrode shaped in receptacle form, a second electrode of a metal other than said first metal centrally disposed in said receptacle, unitary electrolyte-depolarizer wafers disposed on opposite sides and in contact with said second electrode, said wafers being a pressure compacted composition consisting essentially of an intimate finely divided mixture of a depolarizer, a fusible alkali metal salt electrolyte, and an inert absorbent, the absorbent being present in an amount sufficient to absorb the electrolyte when in a fluid condition.

A method of inducing rapid failure in a shape that is under stress and is composed of cold rolled steel comprising applying against a surface of said cold rolled steel shape a mixture composed of lithium metal, lithium chloride and potassium chloride, rapidly heating that mixture as well as the surface of the steel shape in contact therewith sufficiently to melt the mixture but below the annealing temperature of the steel, and maintaining that temperature until the steel shape cracks.
