A continuous flow of particulate solids to a reactor is accomplished by first forming a heavy slurry in a storage tank, then transferring the heavy slurry to a mixing tank, where the heavy slurry is diluted to form a dilute slurry of desired density which can be continuously pumped to the reactor. Control of the particulate solids flow to the reactor is accomplished by calculating the flow rate of solid particles contained in the dilute slurry in an on-line computer, and comparing the calculated value to a desired value. The on-line calculation of particulate flow is based on the measured density and flow rate of the dilute slurry, and the predetermined densities of the dry particulate solids and the liquid diluent consituting the dilute slurry. The flow rate of the dilute slurry is continuously manipulated so as to maintain a desired flow rate of solid particles contained in the dilute slurry.

Particulate flow control

An apparatus and method are provided wherein liquid is removed from a liquid-solids mixture by employing both filtration and low pressures to achieve vaporization of liquid. The mixture is introduced to a vessel in which the mixture is filtered so that a substantial portion of the liquid is withdrawn from the vessel. The vessel is then depressurized to an extent necessary to vaporize a substantial portion of the remaining liquid. Such vapor is withdrawn from the vessel. During vaporization, the contents of the vessel are agitated and heated.

Rod type supports or baffles are disclosed for arrays of tubes, especially those arranged in the form of a tube bundle. Each baffle comprises a pair of arcuate surfaces with a plurality of rods extending therebetween and each rod being non-normally disposed with respect to the axis of a tube bundle. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of baffles are employed in a tube bundle so as to cause shell side fluid to sweep across the tubes in a spiral pattern, such as a double helical pattern. The invention provides an improvement in the mixing of shell side fluid in a rod baffle heat exchanger.

The walls surrounding the atomization chamber in a catalytic cracking unit where the cracking catalyst surrounds the atomization chamber are cooled by a flow of cooling fluid and baffles to cause the cooling fluid to flow in generally annular streams with crossflow between the annular streams being in a generally radially inwardly direction.

In a shell-tube heat exchanger which can be a single pass or multiple pass exchanger, a stream distributing means of baffle is provided to distribute a fluid entering and/or exiting the shell side of the exchanger so that at least a portion of the entering or exiting fluid is directed toward the adjacent tube sheet, comprising a flow deflecting means positioned transverse of the tubes and in between the tubes which are located between the centerline of a pass of the exchanger and the shell inlet and/or outlet, and in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the shell inlet and/or outlet.
