A pupil expander is formed from a frame of shape-memory material with a covering made of elastomer. The frame is in the form of two arc-shaped sections connected together at one end to form a broken circle having free distal ends. Each arc-shaped section has an upper frame portion and a lower frame portion connected to each other at the distal ends thereof. The covering is disposed over each arc-shaped section and has a C-shaped cross section so as to form an outwardly facing groove between the upper frame portion and the lower frame portion. The pupil expander is configured to be folded in half with the grooves facing each other and straightened so as to form a cylindrical body for insertion into a tubular applicator and upon release from the applicator, the pupil expander resumes the shape of the broken circle to push the margins of the pupil wider.

A refraction device includes a main body, a spherical power lens coupled to the main body, an astigmatic power lens movably coupled to the main body, and a visual display coupled to the main body and oriented toward an optical pathway extending through the spherical power lens and the astigmatic power lens. The visual display is configured to display an image for testing visual acuity.

Refraction devices

An ophthalmic surgical instrument for severing a lens of an eye has an elongated shaft and a snare formed by a wire extending along the elongated shaft and having a looped segment that moves between contracted and dilated configurations. When the shaft is inserted through the pupil and the looped segment is placed around the lens, the bottom portion of the looped segment engages and severs a bottom portion of the lens upon moving toward the contracted configuration. A light-conducting element extends along at least a portion of a length of the looped segment, and a light source is in communication with the light-conducting element, such that light from the light source travels through the element and illuminates at least a portion of the length of the looped segment. The light-conducting element can be a tube surrounding the wire, or can be a solid filament extending adjacent the wire.

An endo-optic illuminator has a compartment, a divider within the compartment, and a fiber optic cable in optical communication with the divider and with the light source of a microscope. The fiber optic cable transmits the light through its length. The cable has two ends: a tip and a base. A user then positions the cable to emit light with the tip proximate a patient's eye. Opposite the tip, the base connects the cable to the light source. The divider redirects light from the light source into the base of the fiber optic cable and then onward to illuminate its tip. The divider includes a prism, beam splitter, mirror flip, occluder, shutter, and the like. The fiber optic cable transmits light with less than a 10% loss of candlepower along its length. The illuminator replaces a second separate light source currently used by ophthalmologists.

Endo-optic illuminator

A toric axis marker has a handle, a coaxial tip, a head upon the tip, a dial axially above the head, and a marker head with two blades connecting to the dial. The dial and blades rotate simultaneously and concentrically upon the head. The head and its components have a central aperture for a surgeon to use in positioning the marker relative to the center of an eye. The marker head has its two blades upon a common diameter. The dial has two symmetric arcuate windows that reveal an angle scale. The marker body has an inwardly offset angle to the handle. Each blade has a blunt edge outwardly from the marker head and a slightly curved shape that conforms to the shape of an eyeball, proximate the cornea. With the blades positioned, a surgeon marks the cornea with an ink for incision locations.
