A new power supply topology is described consisting of an input h-bridge or half-h-bridge, a low coupling coefficient transformer such as an air core transformer, a secondary resonant circuit, and a voltage multiplier which includes a series output capacitance. The topology is advantageous for high voltages since the reduced coupling leads to large spacings reduced insulation requirements.

Loosely coupled parallel resonant converter

A digital tomography system includes an electron source that provides a beam of electrons, and an electromagnet assembly that receives said beam of electrons and is configured and arranged to direct the beam of electrons along a selected path, wherein the assembly provides a redirected beam of electrons. The system also includes a target that is struck by the redirected beam of electrons and generates a cone of x-rays, and a slit collimator that receives the cone of x-rays and generates a fan beam. A first line of detectors is positioned to detect x-rays that pass through the object under inspection, and provide sensed signals indicative thereof to a controller that receives the sensed signals and forms a displayable image of a selected plane through the object under inspection.

Imaging with digital tomography and a rapidly moving x-ray source

An electron beam as a curing technique with dynamic beam control technology in order to produce arbitrarily shaped parts. The result of this is equipment which can create prototypes and parts rapidly without additional tooling. The electron beam from a low divergence gun is accelerated towards uncured monomer in vacuum. Deflection of the beam combined with a grid which is used to turn the beam on and off, creates a two dimensional curing path with a depth of approximately five (5) thousandths of inch. Successive layers of this type, built up as monomer is added, creates a three dimensional pattern. The layers can either be of uniform thickness, or can be varied in thickness by varying the energy of the beam.

Method and apparatus for high speed electron beam rapid prototyping

Transmission and scatter detectors for an x-ray inspection system preferably employing a moving pencil beam comprise a solid plastic scintillating material having a front planar surface that is impinged by incident x-ray energy. The detectors also include light detectors that are cooperatively mounted to the plastic scintillating material to detect photons within the plastic scintillating material created in response to x-rays incident on the front planar surface. The detector may be a transmission detector or a scatter detector. The detectors of the present invention are relatively thin in comparison to prior art detectors, which allows shielding to be reduced. In addition, the detectors of the present invention have a greater efficiency of detection in comparison to the prior art detectors.

X-ray inspection system detector with plastic scintillating material

High energy scanning apparatus including a high voltage electrostatic generator and particle accelerator. A variable-trajectory electron beam is converted to a photon beam and collimated by a stationary collimator having a plurality of photon-passing slits. The stationary collimator produces a plurality of photon beams linearly and angularly displaced relative to each other in two dimensions. The photon beams are detected, thereby producing a plurality of preselected images including stereoscopic images. Also disclosed is a method of using the apparatus.

A high voltage generator/particle accelerator with nested electrostatic generators each of which is sufficiently isolated from its neighbors that insulators between them can efficiently isolate them from one another at respectively lower voltages. The advantages of the greater efficiency of the insulators at lower voltages can be utilized to reduce the bulk of the over-all device.

Nested high voltage generator/particle accelerator

A pulse forming network or capacitor load is charged to a precise voltage from an energy storing device with a circuit including a transformer having a primary connected in series with a switch and storage device and a secondary connected in series with the load and a monitor circuit. The monitor circuit develops an output signal indicative of the load voltage and current. In response to the output signal increasing to a predetermined value the switch is opened. The transformer, having a substantial leakage inductance, releases its stored energy when the switch is opened. The transformer stored energy is coupled to the load and to a capacitor connected to the primary. Charge stored in the capacitor after the load requirements have been satisfied is transferred back to the energy storage device.

Circuit for coupling energy to pulse forming network or capacitor

A pulse sharpening circuit is disclosed for decreasing the current and voltage risetimes of pulse power devices. It is useful in many systems ranging from the particle beam fusion accelerator to field emission electron guns for intense microwave sources requiring an extremely quick high power turn-on for proper operation. A polyvinyl chloride dielectric flashover switch is used in combination with a velvet covered transmission line which has a metal ring near its end to produce switching when the initial radial electron flow is diverted to axial electron flow as the critical magnetic insulation current is exceeded. Nominal peak voltages of 500 Kv have been obtained with current and voltage risetimes of 0.5 nanoseconds.

Fast risetime pulse power system

Ion implantation devices in which the ion source is comprised of one or more vacuum spark gaps arranged to create a plasma and manipulated using magnetic fields are described. Each spark gap is comprised of a point electrode and a surface electrode with the plasma being generated from the surface electrode when a spark is initiated across the gap. A plurality of these spark gaps are coupled to a magnetically insulated ion diode. The spark gaps are arrayed around the azimuth of the ion diode so that plasma flows in and out of the diode along the lines of the magnetic field. The method of arraying the gaps results in an efficient, controllable, high density manner with extended pulse length. A second embodiment of these principles results in an advantageous implantation source using permanent magnets rather than grids. The spark gaps permit ion source versatility in that a wide variety of solid surfaces can be used as ion sources.

Ion implantation source and device

An autogenerating apparatus provides secondary intense relativistic current beam pulses in response to an injected beam pulse. One or more electromagnetic energy storage devices are provided in conjunction with gaps along a beam propagation path for the injected beam pulse. For injected beam pulses which are no longer than double the transit time of electromagnetic waves within the storage devices (which may be resonant cavities), distinct secondary beam pulses are generated by each of the energy storage devices. The beam propagation path, together with the one or more gaps provided therein, operates as a pulse forming transmission line cavity, in which the separate cavities associated with the gaps provide delays for electromagnetic waves generated at the gaps. After doubly traversing the cavity, the electromagnetic waves cause the gap to generate the secondary beam pulses, which are thus delayed by a time interval equal to the double transit time for the induced wave within the cavity.
