A fiber optic device comprises an optical lens element having a focal length greater than 2 mm, and an optical signal source or receiver mounted at the focal plane of the optical lens element and operative to communicate optical signals with a selectively transparent interference filter through the optical lens element. Methods for the production and use of the fiber optic devices are also disclosed.

Optical devices and methods

A thermally stabilized optical filter device includes a multilayer optical bandpass filter on a transparent substrate, with the transparent substrate being composed of a material having a first coefficient of thermal expansion. An encasement surrounds the transparent substrate such that the bandpass filter is exposed for transmission of predetermined optical wavelengths there through. The encasement is composed of a material having a second coefficient of thermal expansion that is different than the first coefficient of thermal expansion. The encasement provides thermal stability to the optical properties of the bandpass filter by compensating for changes in the filter that occur with temperature variations. In another embodiment, a collet assembly provides means for selectively compressing a filter chip to tune the filter response.

Extrinsically athermalized optical filter devices

The present invention discloses a bonding collar for coupling optical components and methods for manufacturing the bonding collar and mounting the optical components to the bonding collar. The bonding collar is composed of a material having a thermal expansion coefficient comparable to that of the coupled optical components and is formed by a first socket into one end of a cylindrical blank and a square second socket in communication with the first socket so that when a GRIN lens is inserted in the first socket and a filter is placed in the second socket, the GRIN lens and filter will directly contact each other. Further, the manufacturing process ensures alignment between the two sockets. The filter and GRIN lens are bonded to the bonding collar by applying adhesive to the visible interfaces that the bonding collar forms with the GRIN lens and the filter.

Optical component coupling and method for manufacturing same

A sample card transport station moves a test sample card from an incubation station for the card to a transmittance and fluorescence optical station in a sample testing machine. The sample card transport station has a drive belt and an associated stepper motor. The belt supports the card from one side of the card. A ledge having a card slot is disposed above the belt. The card is snugly received within the card slot, and supported from below by the drive belt and rollers for the belt. When the motor turns the belt, the belt grips the card and slide the card along the slot to the optical stations, without any slippage between the belt and the card. This construction provides for precise control over the movement of the card. The fluorescence station has a linear flash lamp that illuminates a column of the wells of the cards simultaneously. A reference detector and dichromatic beam splitter design is used to insure that the fluorescence measurements are independent of lamp output changes over time. A solid reference is mounted to an optical shuttle and moved into the optical path to calibrate the fluorescence photodiode detectors.

Optical reader and sample card transport stations for biological sample

A process suitable for forming multi-layer (up to at least several hundred layers) monotonic/linear variable/wedge filter coatings on a single substrate surface and for forming monolithic filter assemblies which incorporate such filters, is disclosed along with the designs for such filters. The monolithic process uses radially variable filter fabrication techniques in combination with ion-assisted deposition to form stress controlled, radially variable filter coatings of the desired varied optical profile, preferably using high and low index materials stich as tantala and silica. Stress is minimized by balancing the amount of ion assist and the coating rate. Slices are cut radially from the substrate to form quasi-linear variable filters. Other coatings such as, but not limited to, a wide band hot mirror can be formed on the opposite surface of the substrate from the radially variable LVF method. The method forms complex multi-layer thick filters with high yields on a single substrate surface such that the filter is free of precession or sideways leakage of light between the parallel surfaces. Also disclosed is an optical filter having stacks arranged so that the magnitude of the characteristic center wavelength of each stack increases from stack to stack along the desired direction of traversal of incident light through the filter. As a result of this sequential construction, diffuse leaks are blocked from transmission through the filter. The diffuse leak-suppressed filter can be formed by various processes, including the monolithic process.
