The present invention relates to high melt swell partially neutralized alpha olefin acid copolymers. It also relates to a process for making such high melt swell polymers as well as for covalently crosslinking other polar copolymers including non-neutralized acid copolymers and non-polar alpha olefin polymers by using a minor amount of metal acrylate, particularly sodium or zinc acrylate.

High melt swell polymer

Heat sealable films for packaging food products, particularly in applications where the packaged food product is heated at high temperatures in a hot water bath. The films have a sealant layer containing an acid copolymer. The acid copolymer has a high degree of ethylene crystallinity and therefore an unusually high melting temperature. The sealant layer provides excellent seal strength and excellent adhesion to meat, particularly poultry, even during hot water immersion.

Cook-in packaging and methods relating thereto

Highly flexible articles having wall thickness of at least 0.01 inches are made from chlorine-free direct ethylene copolymers containing small amounts of selected known slip additives. Articles in the form of tubes or tubing have particular utility for replacement of PVC based tubing used in medical applications.

The viscosity stability of a copolymer of ethylene with at least one comonomer which is an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid is improved by exposing the isolated copolymer to moisture for a sufficient period to cause the copolymer to retain at least 20 weight percent more water than it would retain if it were purged with air or nitrogen heated to a temperature at least 5.degree. C. above ambient, which air or nitrogen has not been humidified after it has been heated to such temperature.

Process for ionically crosslinking first copolymers formed by copolymerizing at least one alpha-olefin of the general formula RCH=CH.sub.2 where R is hydrogen or hydrocarbyl having 1 to 8 carbon atoms and at least one alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid having 1 to 2 carboxylic acid groups and 3 to 8 carbon atoms, the alpha-olefin content of the first copolymer comprising at least 50 mole percent of the first copolymer, the alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated acid content of said first copolymer comprising 0.2 to 25 mole percent of the first copolymer which comprises mixing the first copolymer with a cation-supplying blend of 20 to 80 percent by weight of substantially water-insoluble zinc oxide and/or zinc hydroxide and/or zinc carbonate, 0 to 10 percent by weight of a lubricant and a complemental amount of a second copolymer with a melt index of 50 to 2000 g./10 min. formed as the first copolymer, at a pressure of 100 to 10,000 p.s.i., at a temperature above the melting point of both the first and second copolymers and between 100.degree.C. and 330.degree.C., with the amount of the cation-supplying blend present being that amount which has sufficient cations to neutralize at least 10 percent of the carboxylic acid groups in the first and second copolymers and neutralizing at least 10 percent of the carboxylic acid groups in the first and second copolymers, characterized in that there is present during the crosslinking reaction, 0.5 to 20 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the cation-supplying blend, of at least one zinc salt of a volatile organic acid.
