An improved gas laser is disclosed. The laser has a support tube to support and to maintain the alignment of the optical resonator structure. The gas lasing medium is used within the support tube to maintain the tube at a substantially constant temperature above the ambient. Furthermore, an active temperature controller is disclosed. The temperature controller maintains the gas lasing medium in the support tube at a substantially constant temperature. An active pressure controller is also disclosed. The active pressure controller uses a pressure sensor, an electronic processor, and a motor-driven needle valve to maintain the pressure of the gas lasing medium in the laser within the desired operating pressure range. The laser can also be switched in operation from a continuous mode to a pulsing mode. An active power control system is disclosed wherein the power output of the laser, through an active feedback loop is maintained at the desired level. Because the optical resonator structure is light weight, it can be mounted on a mechanical assembly. The beam is delivered to a desired location by the mechanical assembly. Finally, a distributive lasing system comprising a centralized pump delivering the lasing medium to a plurality of remotely located optical resonator structures is disclosed.

Apparatus is disclosed for forming plural rows of holes in a web of sheet material being advanced longitudinally along a unidirectional path of travel, the apparatus including a continuous wave laser and beam delivery apparatus. Beam delivering means delivers substantially the entire energy of the laser beam for predetermined periods of time to discrete web portions spaced apart across the web and includes means periodically interposed into and removed from the path of the laser beam for deflecting the beam periodically toward the web portions.

A method and apparatus are disclosed utilizing a laser for heat treating a transformation hardenable workpiece. Sufficiently high laser power densities are provided at the workpiece surface to cause an incandescent reaction with the workpiece, but incandescent reaction is limited to a sufficiently short period of time to prevent any substantial melting of the workpiece. Pre-conditioning the workpiece prior to heat treatment, squelching the workpiece with a gaseous jet, and techniques for work-hardening cylindrical workpieces are also disclosed.

A method and apparatus for cutting and heat sealing the ends of lengths of woven thermoplastic material is disclosed with the apparatus including selectively activated means for feeding predetermined lengths of a material from a supply across the supporting surface. Means releasably clamp the material lengths against the supporting surface, with a gap extending transversely of the material lengths to expose portions of the material through the gap. A laser beam is directed against the exposed portions of the material, with the laser beam being moved transversely of that material along the gap and removing the material exposed to the laser beam and heat sealing the portions of the material immediately adjacent that removed.

Apparatus and method for cutting and heat sealing woven thermoplastic

A high speed process and apparatus are disclosed for forming outlet passageways of accurate, predetermined size in the walls of pills which dispense their contents by osmotically pumping said contents out said outlet passageways. The pills are moved in succession by an indexer past a passageway forming station where the pills are tracked seriatim at the velocity at which they are moving by an optical tracking system focused on the pill wall and into which a laser beam is directed. During the tracking the laser is fired and the laser beam is transmitted by the optical tracking system onto the wall of the moving pill, the laser power, laser beam dimensions and firing duration being such as to cause the laser beam to heat and pierce the pill wall, thereby forming said outlet passageway.

Process for forming outlet passageways in pills using a laser

Apparatus is disclosed in a system for drilling holes with a laser beam in a plurality of discrete moving workpieces carried by a support which moves each workpiece sequentially along a predetermined path at a predetermined velocity, the apparatus including means for sequentially tracking along a portion of such path each workpiece being drilled seriatim by the laser beam. This tracing apparatus includes means for directing the laser beam generally transversely of the direction of movement of the workpiece on the support and a mirror for folding the transversely directed laser beam toward the workpieces with means for oscillating the folding mirror synchronously with the movement of the workpiece to track the workpiece as it moves.
