A reusable filter to remove contaminants from high temperature gases, in excess of 4500.degree. F., developed by burning propellants and used to do work such as actuation of piston-powered devices in aircraft store ejector racks. Contaminants are removed to prevent fouling of the device being acted upon. The filter has at least one metal strip wound in the form of a flat spiral about a central member, the turns of the flat spiral being spaced from one another to permit axial entry of gas between the turns. A further flat spiral filter may be similarly constructed about the central member and axially displaced from the first filter, and both such filters may have different filtering capacities. On each flat spiral, protuberances are spaced along one side of the metal strip to establish filter gaps between the turns. The one or more flat spirals are restrained at their outer circumference by a cylindrical casing having inlet and outlet ends for the hot gas. Convoluted spacing supports serve to maintain the axial positioning of the one or more flat spirals within the casing, and also maintain the shape of the casing at positions where the casing is not in contact with the outer circumference of the spirals. The metal strip forming each flat spiral, and the convoluted spacing supports, are made of molybdenum, columbium or tantalum. Filtering gaps in a radial direction between adjacent turns of each spiral may be of the order of a few microns to a few hundred microns.

Reusable axial filter for high temperature gases

A reusable filter to remove contaminants from high temperature gases, in excess of 4500.degree. F., developed by burning propellants and used to do work such as actuation of piston-powered devices in aircraft store ejector racks. Contaminants are removed to prevent fouling of the device being acted upon. The filter has a metal strip wound in the form of a helix, the turns of the helix being spaced from one another to permit side entry of the gas between the turns. Protuberances spaced along one side of the strip establish filter gaps between the turns. A closed, convoluted structural support runs through the center of the helix from one end to the other of the filter in order to support the shape of the helix. The convoluted structural support also defines a plurality of axial flow passages between its closed surface and the helix, the passages communicating with the filter gaps to allow axial gas flow along the inside of the filter for end exit. The metal strip and structural support are both made of molybdenum, columbium or tantalum. Studs pass through the interior of the convoluted structural support to hold the filter together. Filtering gaps in an axial direction between adjacent turns of the helix may be of the order of a few microns to a few hundred microns.

Reusable helical filter for high temperature gases

A reusable filter to remove contaminants from high temperature gases, in excess of 4500.degree. Contaminants are removed to prevent fouling of the device being acted upon, to increase reliability and to decrease maintenance of the device. The filter has stacked metal discs spaced from one another to permit side entry of the gas between the disc edges, and the discs are made of molybdenum, columbium or tantalum. A plurality of studs pass through the discs to align and hold the filter together, with raised bosses at the stud holes in each disc establishing the filter gaps between the discs. Each disc has a plurality of flow openings communicating with the filter gaps and aligned with the openings of the other discs to allow axial gas flow along the filter for end exit. The discs are sufficient in size and number to provide adequate filtering capability and absorb heat to prevent melting, but are not so large as to remove excess heat from the gas upstream from where the gas does its work. Filtering gaps in an axial direction between adjacent discs may be of the order of a few microns to a few hundred microns.

Reusable disc filter with spacing bosses for high temperature gasses

A reusable filter to remove contaminants from high temperature gases, in excess of 4500.degree. F., developed by burning propellants and used to do work such as actuation of piston-powered devices in aircraft store ejector racks. Contaminants are removed to prevent fouling of the device being acted upon, to increase reliability and to decrease maintenance of the device. The filter has alternating stacked metal discs and foil spacers to permit side entry of the gas. The discs and spacers are made of molybdenum, columbium or tantalum. A plurality of studs pass through the discs and spacers to align and hold the filter together. Each spacer has a plurality of extended peripheral portions extending toward the circumference of the adjacent discs to define filter gaps. Each disc has a plurality of flow openings communicating with the filter gaps and aligned with the openings of the other discs to allow axial gas flow along the filter for end exit. The discs and spacers are sufficient in size and number to provide adequate filtering capability and absorb heat to prevent melting, but are not so large as to remove excess heat from the gas upstream from where the gas does its work. Filtering gaps in an axial direction between adjacent discs may be of the order of a few microns to a few hundred microns.

Reusable disc filter with foil spacers for high temperature gases

A swaybrace system includes one or more pairs of opposing swaybrace arms that pivot in relation to aircraft structure, each arm with a pad thereon automatically being biased by a spring-loaded wedge or the like to cause the pad to contact with the store under all load conditions. Each arm in one embodiment is bifurcated into upper and lower portions capable of flexing, the store-contacting pad being attached to the lower portion, with the lower portion flexing with respect to the upper portion through a predetermined distance Sa for pad loads between zero and a predetermined pre-load. The upper portion, together with the lower portion and pad, flexes about the wedge through a predetermined distance Sb for pad loads between the predetermined pre-load and a predetermined maximum load. An alternate embodiment utilizes resilient means between the pad and arm to allow the pad to move through the predetermined distance Sa with respect to the arm, the arm together with the pad flexing about the wedge through the predetermined distance Sb, all under corresponding load conditions. Distance Sa equals distance SB in each embodiment. Each embodiment automatically loads itself to obtain adequate but not excessive store pre-loads at each pad, to properly restrain the store but limit maximum hook loads.
