A surgical alignment system employs a laser beam generating device and a lens system to convert the beam into a plane of light which is aligned along a desired axis of the human body to provide proper alignment to the surgeon to enhance the accuracy of orthopedic surgery such as total knee, hip or back surgery. The laser beam generating device is mounted on a bracket which is fixed to a cassette holder positioned beneath the patient and having a chamber designed to removably receive an x-ray film cassette. The cassette holder is made of a material which is transparent to x-rays. Straps incorporated into the cassette holder are designed to fix the patient to the cassette holder during surgery. The cassette holder includes a radio-opaque indicator with the bracket holding the laser beam generating device having a second radio-opaque indicator so that when an x-ray is taken of the patient affixed to the inventive device, compensation for parallax may be carried out.

Surgical laser beam-based alignment system and method

A bi-directional endoscope comprising a catheter body having a tubular spring frame attached to and extending axially from the distal end thereof. The spring frame comprises a spring body which includes a tip member positioned on the distal end thereof, and a plurality of relief slots disposed therein for allowing the deflection of the spring frame within a first deflection plane. The relief slots are formed in the spring body in a manner defining first and second longitudinally extending stiffening portions which are oriented substantially diametrically opposite each other therewithin. Extending longitudinally through the catheter body and spring frame is a pair of activation wires which are encased by a pair of support sleeves. The spring frame is deflected by stressing the activation wires by subjecting either of the wires to a tensile force. Stressing the wires as operable to transmit the tensile force from the stressed wire to the tip member thus causing the spring body to deflect in the first deflection plane toward the stressed wire.

In an apparatus for separating radionuclides from non-radionuclides in a mixture of nuclear waste, a vessel is provided wherein the mixture is heated to a temperature greater than the temperature of vaporization for the non-radionuclides but less than the temperature of vaporization for the radionuclides. Consequently the non-radionuclides are vaporized while the non-radionuclides remain the solid or liquid state. The non-radionuclide vapors are withdrawn from the vessel and condensed to produce a flow of condensate. When this flow decreases the heat is reduced to prevent temperature spikes which might otherwise vaporize the radionuclides. The vessel is removed and capped with the radioactive components of the apparatus and multiple batches of the radionuclide residue disposed therein. Thus the vessel ultimately provides a burial vehicle for all of the radioactive components of the process.
