A variable valve timing assembly is provided for extending a duration of an intake valve opening. The variable valve timing assembly includes an intake rocker mounted on a pedestal and operable by a cam lobe to open and close the intake valve. The intake rocker includes a lever extension, and a holding member in the pedestal is lockable in position by a hydraulic circuit in the pedestal to contact the lever extension of the intake rocker and hold the intake valve in the open position. A reset pin in the pedestal is actuatable by the cam lobe to release the holding member to allow the intake valve to close.

An aftertreatment system can include a radiation shield for reducing and/or redirecting radiative thermal energy. The aftertreatment system can include a first housing, a second housing, a first aftertreatment component, and the radiation shield. The first aftertreatment component is positioned within one of a first interior volume of the first housing or a second interior volume of the second housing. The radiation shield includes an attachment portion and a thermal barrier portion. The attachment portion is coupled to an exterior of the first housing or the second housing. The thermal barrier portion is structured to divert radiative thermal energy in a second direction different than a source direction of the radiative thermal energy.

An engine compression braking system having a rocker lever and reset valve assembly to operate an engine in both normal power and braking modes while effectively controlling opening and closing of the exhaust valve for compression braking. The reset valve assembly includes a reset pin mounted in a passage of the rocker arm and movement of the reset pin in the compression mode of braking is controlled by contact of the reset pin with a support shaft which the rocker arm rotates around.

Compression relief brake reset mechanism

An early intake valve closing (EIVC) and variable valve timing (VVT) assembly and method are provided for an internal combustion engine. The method includes operating an intake valve to open and close an intake port and allow intake gas to enter a cylinder of the internal combustion engine containing a piston, where the timing of the closing of the intake valve occurs at or before bottom dead center (BDC) of the compression stroke of the piston. The method further includes selectively extending duration of the opening of the intake port by an amount that delays closing timing of the intake valve until after BDC of the piston compression stroke. An assembly for EIVC and VVT includes a cylinder head including an intake valve and intake port and a rotatably mounted camshaft including an intake lobe operatively connected to the intake valve to periodically move the valve into the first and second positions. The intake lobe is shaped such that the timing of the closing position occurs at or before BDC of a compression stroke of the piston. The assembly further includes a selectively activatable VVT assembly having an actuator that operatively engages the intake valve before the intake valve reaches the closed position to extend duration of the intake valve opening until after BDC of the piston compression stroke.

A method is disclosed for adjusting a target EGR mass flow in response to a current charge flow and target EGR fraction. The method includes interpreting an air-fuel ratio and a target air-fuel ratio. The method further includes interpreting a charge flow and a target EGR fraction. The method further includes determining an adjusted target EGR mass flow based on the air-fuel ratio, the target air-fuel ratio, the charge flow, and the target EGR fraction. The method further includes controlling an actuator based on the adjusted target EGR mass flow.

In one aspect, an apparatus includes a first intake valve controlling air flow from a first intake port to a piston cylinder of the internal combustion engine, where the first intake valve has a first lift profile. A second intake valve controls air flow from a second intake port to the piston cylinder, where the second intake valve has a second lift profile different than the first lift profile. The combination of first and second lift profiles causes a variable swirl of air in the cylinder as a function of engine speed.

An apparatus and method for controlling exhaust gas recirculation flow. The apparatus and method uses a pressure-bleeding device, such as a wastegate valve, to change the pressure in an internal combustion engine in order to alter the flow rate of the exhaust gas through an exhaust gas recirculation conduit. In one form, the invention includes an inlet conduit connected to an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine and an exhaust conduit connected to exhaust manifold of an internal combustion engine. The pressure-bleeding device is operatively coupled to the intake conduit. Altering the pressure in the intake conduit changes the pressure across the entire system. This change in pressure in the entire system results in a change in pressure across the exhaust gas recirculation conduit. Therefore, a flow is created through the exhaust gas recirculation conduit and can be controlled using the intake side pressure bleeding device.

Boost wastegate device for EGR assist

An engine compression braking system having an integral rocker lever and reset valve utilizes a single rocker lever to operate an engine in both normal power and braking modes while effectively closing an exhaust valve to define a braking mode exhaust valve opening event prior to a primary opening event. The system includes a reset valve mounted on the rocker arm a spaced distance from an actuator piston to relieve fluid pressure from a high pressure circuit after an initial opening of the exhaust valve. A reset contact element is mounted on a stationary engine component for engagement by the reset valve during movement of the rocker lever to cause opening of the reset valve and relief of the pressure. In one embodiment, a bias chamber and bias chamber supply circuit are provided to permit low pressure braking fluid to be continuously supplied to an actuator supply circuit.

A unit fuel injector adapted to receive fuel from a fuel supply at relatively low pressure and adapted to inject fuel at relatively high pressure into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine is provided, comprising an injector body having a first internal bore and an injector orifice and a plunger mounted for reciprocating movement within the first internal bore to define a variable volume fuel pressurization chamber including a cam actuated upper plunger portion and a lower plunger portion mounted in the first internal bore between the variable volume fuel pressurization chamber and the upper plunger portion. While the upper plunger portion is in its retracted position, low pressure fuel from the fuel supply is supplied to the variable volume fuel pressurization chamber. A spring is positioned within the first internal bore to bias the upper and lower plunger portions apart to thereby allow for variation of the volume of fuel which flows into the variable volume fuel pressurization chamber during each cycle of injection operation in dependence on the pressure of the fuel from the fuel supply. A valve assembly including a valve element mounted for reciprocating movement within a second internal bore controls the flow of fuel from the variable volume fuel pressurization chamber to the injector orifice. The valve assembly allows fuel to be discharged through the injector orifice only during the time when the upper plunger portion is in its fully advanced position so that injection pressure is independent of the velocity at which the upper plunger portion moves between its retracted and advanced position.

Solenoid controlled variable pressure injector

A cam follower lever assembly is provided which permits variable control of the timing of the beginning of operation of an engine component, i.e. fuel injector or engine valve. The cam follower lever includes a timing control lever and a force transmitting lever mounted for pivotal movement on a common pivot shaft. The timing control lever is also mounted for nonpivotal movement, relative to the pivot shaft, by a hydraulic actuation device permitting selective nonpivotal movement of the timing control lever relative to a cam's outer surface so as to selectively advance or retard the timing of, for example, fuel injection. The actuation device includes actuator cavities formed in the levers and a control valve arrangement. In one embodiment, a control valve is mounted in a cavity formed in the timing control lever.
