An article that includes a substrate having a surface, at least a portion of which is provided with a pressure sensitive adhesive composition that includes a blend of discrete, crosslinked polymer microspheres and a polymer matrix. Composite pressure sensitive adhesive microspheres are provided comprising two or more water insoluble polymers that are mixed wholly within the boundaries of polymeric microspheres. The range of monomers and polymers are chosen to tailor the properties of the composite pressure sensitive adhesive microspheres for specific performance and/or application requirements. Any polymer that can be dissolved into a solvent monomer or mixture of solvent monomers can be used to prepare the composite pressure sensitive adhesive microspheres. A removable pressure sensitive adhesive comprises pressure sensitive adhesive microparticles that are the polymerization product of a mono-olefinically unsaturated monomer having an aldehyde group or a ketone group, and a base monomer. By the addition of a polyhydrazide, other adhesives with improved properties can be provided.

A pressure sensitive adhesive tape that employs a water-dispersible polymer is provided. The adhesive can comprise microparticles and a water-dispersible component; or microparticles and a novel water-dispersible polymer that contains a plurality of poly(alkoxyalkyl)acrylate units as a major component. The invention provides inherently tacky, polymeric, organic, solvent-insoluble, solvent dispersible, elastomeric, pressure sensitive adhesive microspheres having pendant hydrophilic polymeric or oligomeric moieties having a degree of polymerization greater than or equal to 2. The microspheres which are sterically stabilized can offer enhanced stability against coagulation caused by alkali, alkali salts, polyelectrolytes and repeated freeze/thaw cycles. The present invention also provides pressure-sensitive adhesives comprising these microspheres including aerosol spray PSAs, coated sheet materials prepared therefrom, and method of making the microspheres.
