An intumescent coating system and method therefor is disclosed for thermally protecting a substrate having a surface exposed to fire conditions. The coating system of the present invention is provided as having a having a first film layer which forms a rigid carbonific char foam having toughness and rigidity, and a second film layer which forms an insulative carbonific char foam having insulation properties. The two foam components may be separately provided in a laminate-type arrangement as, respectively, an inner coating layer coated and cured on the surface of the substrate to form an inner film layer, and an outer coating layer coated and cured on the inner film layer to form an outer film layer. In providing two foam components, one protecting the substrate from breakthrough and direct exposure to the fire conditions, and the other insulating the substrate to protect it from conductive, radiant, and/or convective heating by the fire conditions, the present invention affords a capability to offer flame retardancy at film thicknesses of 1.27 mm (50 mils) or less.

Thermally-protective intumescent coating

An intumescent coating system and method therefor is disclosed for thermally protecting a substrate having a surface exposed to a flame environment. The coating system of the present invention is provided as having a having a first component which forms a rigid carbonific char foam having toughness and rigidity, and a second component which forms an insulative carbonific char foam having a density about half the density of the rigid carbonific foam to give insulation properties. The two foam components may be separately provided in a laminate-type arrangement as, respectively, an inner coating layer coated and cured on the surface of the substrate to form an inner film layer, and an outer coating layer coated and cured on the inner film layer to form an outer film layer. Alternatively, the two foams may be provided as being formed from components blended to comprise a single coating layer which is coated and cured on the surface of the substrate to form a film layer. In providing two foam components, one protecting the substrate from breakthrough and direct exposure to the flame environment, and the other insulating the substrate to protect it from conductive, radiant, and/or convective heating by the flame environment, the present invention affords a capability to offer flame retardancy at film thicknesses of less than 50 mils.

Thermally-protective intumescent coating method

The present invention is directed to a water-resistant, aqueous base-dispersible article which comprises a pulp-filled binder, one of which is an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylated (e.g. acrylic) polymer soluble in base, the other of which is water-resistant. Accordingly, the pulp can be water-resistant while the binder is base-dispersible or the converse can be true. Cellulosic and polymeric pulp are ideally suited for filling an base-soluble acrylic polymer. Water-soluble resins can be incorporated into the article for controlling the properties for special purposes. The method for forming such an article comprises yet another aspect of the present invention.

Dispersible articles

The present invention is addressed to a curable, marine anti-fouling composition of a thermoplastic or thermosetting binder, solvent, non-tin, organo antifouling agent, and optionally conventional additives, e.g. leaching agents, opacifying pigments, etc. The anti-fouling agents are found in preferentially-concentrated domains (hereinafter, often referred to as 'PCD') in the cured compositions. The PCDs can be termed non-homogeneous, phase-separated, or incompatible in the system. The art term used in describing the PCDs of anti-fouling agent is not limitative of the invention as the disclosure herein will demonstate. Preferably, PCDs are created by forming an oligomeric adduct of the anti-fouling agent which adduct is formed into PCDs upon the curing of the composition. Additional techniques for forming PCDs of anti-fouling agent are revealed herein. The present invention also is addressed to new, low toxicity anti-fouling agents which comprise pesticide or herbicide compounds having a X factor of between about 0.01 and 3, a Z value for vinyl or aromatic compounds of between about 0.01 and 0.08, and an LD50 value of greater than 200 mg/kg against rats or mice. Such pesticide or algicide compounds broadly can be selected from heterocyclic compounds, aromatic compounds substituted with heteroatom substituents, various amino compounds, carbocyclic vinyl ether ketones, certain phospho compounds, certain polychlorinated carbocyclic and acyclic compounds, certain chlorinated carbocyclic carboxylates, antimony tartrate, boric acid, and cupric oleate. Exemplary aromatic compounds include diaromatic compounds linked with a sigma bond or with a carbon or heteroatom linkage, fused aromatic rings, and mono-aromatic compounds.

Disclosed is an improved marine anti-fouling coating composition of a thermoplastic binder, an organic solvent, a tin anti-fouling agent, a copper anti-fouling agent, and a water-soluble leaching agent. The improvement in can stability for said coating composition comprises the leaching agent being a water-sensitive, solvent soluble non-cross-linked polymer having an acid number of below about 50 and a .chi. value of between about 0.1 and 0.3; or a water-sensitive, solvent soluble, polymer having an acid number of below about 50 and a .chi. value between about 0.3 and 0.6. The water sensitive solvent insoluble polymer may be a non-cross-linked oligomer or polymer or a cross-linked hydrogel possessing the requisite acid number and .chi. value restriction.

Anti-fouling paint containing leaching agent stabilizers

The invention relates to room temperature-curable, non-emissive, flame-retardant coating compositions. The main resin for the coating compositions is a flame-retardant polymer selected from an air dryable flame-retardant polymer, a room-temperature curable mixture of a flame-retardant polymer and curing agent therefor, and mixtures thereof. The solvent for the coating composition is selected from water, a liquid, curable, non-flame promoting solvent and mixtures thereof. The novel liquid, curable, non-flame promoting solvent comprises a liquid polyhalogenated organic ring compound substituted with an air-dryable group.

Disclosed is a non-emissive, flame-retardant coating composition comprising a flame-retardant polymer; a solvent selected from water and/or a liquid, curable, non-flame promoting polyhalogenated solvent containing air-dryable functionality; and, optionally, a non-emissive, non-flame promoting surface-active agent selected from: a cationic, non-emissive, non-flame promoting, curable polyhalogenated compound containing an air-dryable group and a cationic surface-active group; an anionic, non-emissive, non-flame promoting, curable polyhalogenated compound containing an air-dryable group and an anionic surface-active group; and a nonionic, non-emissive, non-flame promoting polyhalogenated compound containing a nonionic surface-active group. Also disclosed is a method for reducing the emissivity of a polyamine/polyamide hardener for an epoxy resin wherein volatile, mobile, low molecular weight amine components in the hardener are reacted preferentially with a trapping agent selected from an epoxy compound and an alpha-, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carbonyl compound. Further disclosed is a method for reducing the tendency to crystallize and to retard dispersion in water of a highly halogenated polyepoxide resin by forming an adduct between at least a fraction of said halogenated polyepoxide resin and a long chain aliphatic compound.
