The invention provides an apparatus including a reactionware and an analytical device for analysing a reaction, the analytical device including at least a plurality of reaction sensors and the analytical device is configured for placement of a plurality of sensors in the reaction space of the reactionware, and optionally the reaction headspace of the reactionware, and the reactionware is a reaction flask having one or more necks, and the analytical device is held in a neck of the reaction flask.

Analytical device and methods of use

An optical apparatus () for routing an optical signal () comprises a body () comprising a material. A waveguide () is formed in the body () by laser modification of the material. The optical apparatus () further comprises a region () comprising a lower refractive index than the material of the body () and defines an interface () between the region () and the waveguide (). The waveguide () and the interface () are aligned relative to each other for routing the optical signal () therebetween and reflecting the optical signal () at the interface ().

Optical apparatus, optical assembly and methods of manufacture thereof

An arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) device comprising a substrate having a first array of waveguides optically coupled between first and second slab couplers and a second array of input-output waveguides optically coupled at first ends thereof to an input/output side of the second slab-coupler. The input/output waveguide are tapered at first end portions thereof so as to increase in width towards the second slap coupler, and the width (W) of the first ends of the input/output waveguides varies across the second array in a manner so as to increase uniformity of at least on performance parameter, for example adjacent crosstalk (AXT). In the described embodiment, the width (W) of the tapered waveguide ends increases from one side to the array of input/output waveguides to the other, so as to keep the separation(s) between the input/output waveguides.

An optical power monitor comprises: an array waveguide grating comprising first and second optical interaction regions between which an input optical signal propagates from a first position on a first side of the first optical interaction region to a second position on a second side of the second optical interaction region, a correspondence between said first and second positions depending upon a wavelength of the optical signal, there being a plurality of array waveguides coupled between a second side of the first optical interaction region and a first side of the second optical interaction region, and a plurality of output waveguides coupled at one end to the second side of the second optical interaction region for outputting different wavelength channel outputs from the second optical interaction region; and detector for detecting said different wavelength channel outputs at the other ends of the output waveguides: wherein the plurality of output waveguides includes at least two output waveguides for at least one of the wavelength channels.

Optical power monitor

An arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) device () comprising a substrate having a first array of waveguides () optically coupled between first and second slab couplers () and a second array of input-output waveguides () optically coupled at first ends thereof to an input/output side () of the second slab-coupler (). The input/output waveguide are tapered at first end portions () thereof so as to increase in width towards the second slap coupler, and the width (W) of the first ends of the input/output waveguides varies across the second array () in a manner so as to increase uniformity of at least on performance parameter, for example adjacent crosstalk (AXT). In the described embodiment, the width (W) of the tapered waveguide ends increases from one side to the array of input/output waveguides () to the other, so as to keep the separation (s) between the input/output waveguides.

An optical device comprises a substrate having at least one light-guiding core and cladding material surrounding the core; a cladding-modifying element disposed alongside, at least in part, a portion of the light-guiding core, the cladding-modifying element being formed of a material different to the cladding material so that the refractive index difference between the material of the cladding-modifying element and the cladding material is dependent upon the temperature of the cladding-modifying element; and a heating and/or cooling arrangement for altering the temperature of the cladding-modifying element.

In an optical amplifier, comprising a rare earth doped optical waveguide, in which signals at signal wavelength and pump power at pump wavelength are coupled together, a differential loss inducing means is located in a predetermined position along the length of the waveguide, causing a loss for the signal greater by a predetermined loss amount than the loss for the pump wavelength, said predetermined loss amount and said predetermined loss position being chosen in a mutual relationship to cause an amplification of lower power input signals, in said signal input power range, greater than the amplification of higher power input signals in said range, by an amount causing a substantially constant output power in a dynamic range of input signals greater than 15 dB.
