A method, device, and system is described herein for pushing a rotary drill bit. Pushing the rotary drill bit can include receiving a target direction in a formation to push the rotary drill bit while drilling a wellbore in a formation. Pushing the rotary drill bit can also include opening, at a first rotational position of a rotary bit pushing device disposed proximate to the rotary drill bit within the wellbore, a first inlet port of a first flow regulator. Pushing the rotary drill bit can further include closing, after the first rotational position of the rotary bit pushing device, the first inlet port. Pushing the rotary drill bit can also include sending, to a second flow regulator of the rotary bit pushing device, a second quantity of drilling fluid.

A downhole tool control system for a drill string rotary steerable tool that includes a body having an inner chamber, a piston gallery extending between the inner chamber and a piston port, and an exhaust gallery extending between the inner chamber and an exhaust port. A spool in the inner chamber is movable into a plurality of positions to direct and control the timing and duration of the flow of drilling fluid to energize pistons of the rotary steerable tool, and to de-energize the pistons. The spool includes a first passage in fluid communication with a drilling fluid inlet port but not the exhaust port, and a second passage in fluid communication with the exhaust port but not the drilling fluid inlet port.

A shut-off system and control method for a rotary steerable tool that includes a body having an inner chamber, a piston gallery extending between the inner chamber and a piston port, and an exhaust gallery extending between the inner chamber and an exhaust port. A spool in the inner chamber is movable into a plurality of positions to direct and control the flow of drilling fluid to energize pistons of the rotary steerable tool. The spool includes a spool shaft. A first passage extends through the spool shaft and receives drilling fluid via a spool inlet port in the shaft from a drilling fluid inlet port of the rotary steerable tool. A shut off valve is controlled to rotate on the spool shaft to open and shut the spool inlet port to drilling fluid flow.

A method, device, and system is described herein for pointing a rotary drill bit. A rotary bit pointing device is positioned between a proximal end of a control shaft and a universal joint. As the bottom hole assembly rotates, various portions of the rotary bit pointing device are enabled and subsequently disabled to apply a substantially constant force in a substantially constant direction to the control shaft. Such a force causes the distal end of the control shaft to point the rotary drill bit in a target direction.

The present invention provides a directional drilling apparatus and method for use in drilling bore holes. The apparatus comprises a plurality of movably mounted cutting elements, wherein the cutting elements are movable between radially retracted and extended cutting positions. A rotary valve is provided for synchronizing the movement of the cutting elements between their respective extended and retracted positions. Control of the directional drilling system is affected by synchronized movement of the cutting elements from an inner to an outer radial position in accordance with the angular position of the drill bit. Means are provided for directing high pressure cutting fluid to the region between the cutting elements and the rotatable body to prevent the accumulation of debris that could prevent movement of the cutting elements. The cutting elements enlarge the bore hole formed by the drill bit, so that the cutting elements continuously engage the wall of the bore hole.

Steerable rotary directional drilling tool for drilling boreholes

A directional drilling apparatus for use in the directional drilling of bore holes is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a plurality of cutting elements movably mounted with respect to a rotatable body member, wherein the cutting elements are movable between first, radially retracted, positions and radially extended, positions for cutting. A rotary valve is provided for synchronising the movement of the cutting elements between their respective extended and retracted positions in accordance with the rotational position of the body member in the bore hole being drilled. Control of the directional drilling system is affected by synchronised movement of the cutting elements from an inner to an outer radial position in accordance with the angular position of the drill bit. A near bit stabiliser contacts with the portion of the well bore which was not removed with the dynamic cutters and this contact exerts a force onto the drill bit.
