A control system () for an emergency braking system () using at least one transmitter/receiver sensor () comprising: means for causing automatic transition, from a first state () in which the emergency braking system () is inactive to a second state () in which the emergency braking system () is active, in dependence upon satisfaction of a first condition (); and means for causing automatic transition from the second state () to the first state () in dependence upon satisfaction of a second condition () different to the first condition () wherein transition from the second state () to the first state () does not occur in dependence upon the first condition () no longer being satisfied, and/or transition from the first state () to the second state () does not occur in dependence upon the second condition () no longer being satisfied.
