Methods and apparatus for a radiator assembly having a feed circuit with an air interface to a quadridge feed structure to excite an antenna, such as a stacked patch antenna. Embodiments of the assembly can provide enhanced bandwidth, scan angle performance, and coincident phase centers for dual-linear polarizations.

Radiator having a ridged feed structure

A waveguide feed structure having a coaxial transmission line. A conductive, planar septum is disposed in, and along a diameter of, the transmission line. A feed port is electrically coupled to the transmission line. The septum has a rear portion disposed proximate the feed port, such rear portion of the septum extending between the inner conductor and the outer conductor. The feed port and the rear portion of the septum are arranged to establish an electric field in the transmission line between the inner conductor and the outer conductor with a component substantially TE mode along a direction perpendicular to the planar septum. A forward portion of the septum is asymmetrically disposed with respect to said diameter in order to provide a gap between the inner conductor and the outer conductor, such gap establishing an electric field component within the transmission line having a TE component along said diameter of the transmission line parallel to the plane of the septum. The septum has a pair of distal ends. One of the ends is separated from a proximate portion of the outer conductor has a distance different from the separation between the other one of the pair of ends and a proximate portion of the outer conductor. In one embodiment, the first-mentioned distance increases along the transmission line from the rear portion of the septum to the forward portion of the septum. The distance is increased in steps to provide a 90 degree phase shift to energy propagating along the transmission line between a distal end of the septum and the outer conductor.

Radio frequency antenna feed structures having a coaxial waveguide and asymmetric septum

An antenna feed that transmits in a single vertical or horizontal linear polarization at commercial Ka-band while simultaneously receiving both vertical and horizontal polarizations at commercial KU-band is presented. The antenna feed includes a metal feed horn, an integrated corrugated ring filter, an outer conductor disposed coaxially about the feed horn, a hollow inner conductor disposed coaxially within the feed horn and a polyrod disposed within the hollow inner conductor. The antenna feed further includes a PCB having receive channel RF probes, 180-degree hybrid combiners and LNB circuitry. The PCB is surrounded by a housing which is attached to the feed horn.

Dual band satellite communications antenna feed

An integrated directional patch antenna uses multiple patch radiating elements to control the direction of a beam of radio frequency energy (RF) over a large scan volume. The antenna includes a ground plane element and a first dielectric planar member placed on a major surface of the ground plane element. A plurality of first patch radiator elements is arranged on a surface of the first dielectric member remote from the ground plane element. A second dielectric planar member is placed on first patch radiator elements, and a plurality of second patch radiator elements arranged on a surface of the second dielectric member remote from the first patch radiator elements. First regions are formed in the dielectric planar member that have a first dielectric constant and are separated from each other by second regions that have a dielectric constant different from the first dielectric constant to effectively prevent surface wave energy from propagating in the first dielectric planar member, thereby increasing the scan volume of the antenna.
