Provided is a method, system, and program for managing Input/Output (I/O) requests generated by an application program. The I/O requests are transmitted to an output device. A determination is made of a priority associated with the I/O request, wherein the priority is capable of being at least one of a first priority and a second priority. The I/O request is transmitted if the determined priority is the first priority. Transmittal of the I/O request is deferred if the determined priority is the second priority.

A method and apparatus for providing multi-path I/O in non-concurrent clustering environment is disclosed. Shared non-concurrent access to logical volumes through multiple paths is provided by using SCSI-3 persistent reserve commands. Open options of the operating system are mapped to SCSI persistent reserve commands to allow all of the multiple paths to register with the logical unit number of the shared storage system and to allow the second of the multiple paths to access the logical unit number of the shared storage system after obtaining a persistent reservation with the shared storage system.

In a computer system having memory in a processor and a plurality of attached heterogeneous disk storage subsystems, a system and method for managing the storage subsystems is provided. A volume of data is copied from a first disk storage subsystem from a first vendor to a second disk storage subsystem from a second vendor, of equal or greater capacity than the first disk storage subsystem, without requiring specialized hardware. An application program is able to access the data on the first disk storage subsystem while the data is being copied. The volume of data on the second disk storage subsystem is identified, within the computer system, as the volume of data on the first disk storage subsystem after the data is copied.

A method and system for path management of data processing in an environment which includes a plurality of hosts running multiple operating systems is disclosed. The method and system includes providing a portable path management code and providing a plurality of control modules. Each of the control modules has an area which can only be accessed by the portable path management code. The method and system also include providing an interface to at least one device driver from the portable management code to allow the portable management code to control access to plurality of paths to a plurality of storage subsystems by the at least one device driver. The method and system in accordance with the present invention can provide path load balancing and fail over for a plurality of paths to a plurality of storage subsystems. The path management code is portable and platform independent so that the functionality can be ported easily to each operating system in the multiple system environment.

A method is disclosed for curing epoxy adhesive between the slider head and load/gimbal suspension assemblies of a disk drive access actuator employing a concentrated pulsed heat source rather than conventional, broadly applied heat source as employed in the past, such as oven heating or UV exposure. The laser source power is delivered via an optical fiber to the slider air-bearing surface (ABS) of the slider head assembly so that with this approach, the time for curing can be minimized and accurately controlled without causing damage to the assembly, and the overall curing step in the manufacturing process is reduced in time of application. Apparatus in the form of a fixture, such as an anvil element, provides a convenient gauge and support for alignment of the laser output beam with the slider ABS to which the heat for curing is to be applied as well as provide for its heat sinking.

The present invention constructs SCSI device support code so that it can be ported to multiple operating system environments. The present invention also allows support for a device to be coded only once, and yet be supported on multiple operating system environments. Accordingly, a method and system for supporting a plurality of devices utilized with a data processing system is disclosed. This method and system allows for a plurality of devices to be utilized on a plurality of operating system platforms. The method and system comprises receiving a request from a user for a particular device, formatting the request into at least one common packet and then providing the at least one common packet to each of the plurality of operating system platforms. In so doing, any of the plurality of operating system platforms can utilize the at least one common packet to provide a device driver for the particular device. In a system in accordance with the present invention, device support code can be broken into an architected structure that allows it to execute on multiple operating system platforms and control SCSI tape, optical and medium changer devices. The code exists in a single source tree structure and can be built for execution on any of several operating system platforms by appropriate automated build procedures.

A method and system for testing a device driver utilized with a data processing system is disclosed. In a first aspect, the method comprises the steps of inputting a script file to a test engine to provide a test to the device driver, compiling the test engine across multiple operating system platforms. The method also includes sending a command that indicates the test is to be provided to the device driver and sending results of the test of the device driver back to the test engine. In another aspect, a system is disclosed for testing a device driver utilized in a data processing system. The system comprises a script file for providing a test of the device driver and a test engine for receiving the test from the script file. The system also includes a plurality of platform specific library routines for compiling the test engine and test across multiple operating system and multiple device types and for sending the test to the device driver, wherein the test engine receives the results from the test from the device driver upon receiving a system call from the test driver. Through the use of a system and method in accordance with the present invention, device driver tests can be made self-checking and require minimal human intervention to run the tests. In addition, the tests can be rerun at any time to retest new versions of device drivers and/or new versions of the operating system environments.

A method and apparatus for error recovery in various computer data storage devices that are associated with a host computer operating system includes an error recovery module that is coupled to each device driver in the host operating system. When one of the devices reports an error in the form of sense bytes to its associated device driver, the device driver sends the sense bytes and device type identification to the error recovery module. In turn, the error recovery module generates an action token based upon the sense bytes and device type, and then correlates the action token with error recovery actions. The device driver then executes the error recovery actions. Thus, a common error recovery module can be used in conjunction with a large variety of data storage devices.

An optical system and method for image sampling in a video projection system is provided. A beam of illumination light is passed through a first beam-splitting polarizer to provide a first beam of a first polarization state and a second beam of a second polarization state. The first beam is passed through a second beam-splitting polarizer which is oriented at 90.degree. with respect to the first prism. The light from the second prism is then provided to a modulation device which produces a polarization modulated image in reflected outgoing light. The reflected outgoing light is passed through the second prism such that a first portion is directed to an image display screen and a second portion, which contains an image sample, is directed toward the first prism. The image sample is reflected by the first prism and provided to an image detector which detects characteristics of the sample. The detected characeristics are utilized to control the outgoing light.

Optical system and method for image sampling in a video projection system

Autocorrelation traces of laser pulses of short duration are produced by a method and apparatus that uses a rotating glass block to vary the path length on a time scale rapid enough to display the traces on a synchronized oscilloscope. Both paths of a split input beam of a laser pulse pass through the glass block. Rotation of the glass block changes the relative time of travel for light pulses along the two paths. The paths of the two beam arms pass through the block from different directions at a relative angle chosen so that the relative travel time difference is nearly linearly related to the angular position of the block during its rotation. Autocorrelation with rapid scanning through rotation of the block enables measurement of repetitive laser light pulses of very short duration, down to the order of one picosecond. An oscilloscope display of the autocorrelation traces allows the user to make laser adjustments while continuously monitoring the pulse correlation function so that the laser can be tuned in real time to produce ultra-short pulses.
