A system for closing an aperture in a biological tissue includes at least one clip connected to at least one frame arm and for releasably retaining a surgical implant to the frame arm. The clip includes at least one locking structure for engaging a lock bar. A portion of the lock bar selectively engages or contacts the locking structure of the at least one clip to lock the at least one clip in a closed position by inhibiting rotation of the at least one clip when the lock bar is in a locked position. The lock bar allows the at least one clip to rotate to an open position when the lock bar is in an unlocked position. Methods for utilizing the system are also disclosed.

A surgical access portal includes a seal housing and a sleeve mounted to the sleeve housing having an internal longitudinal passage adapted to provide access to underlying tissue. A seal is in mechanical cooperation with an inner wall of the seal housing and has an opening for reception and passage of a surgical instrument in a substantially sealed relation. A sponge is disposed distally of the seal and absorbs fluids that enter the seal housing.

A surgical access device includes a housing; an access member extending distally from the housing and being dimensioned for positioning within tissue, and defining a longitudinal axis; and a seal assembly disposed within the housing. The seal assembly includes first and second seal components respectively having first and second seal members. Each of the first and second seal members defines a passage for passage of a surgical object in substantial sealed relation therewith. The first and second seal components are capable of relative rotation about the longitudinal axis between a first position, in which passages of the first and second seal members are in substantial alignment, and a second position where the passages of the first and second seal members are offset to inhibit the communication of fluid through the seal assembly.

A surgical fastener application apparatus for applying surgical fasteners of general U-shape to body tissue is provided which includes a housing having a handle portion and a trigger mechanism, an elongated body portion extending from the housing, the elongated body portion having generally annular cross-sectional area substantially along the length thereof and defining a longitudinal pathway therein, and a firing mechanism operatively connected to the housing and including a pair of substantially parallel push rods positioned within the longitudinal pathway of the elongated body portion, the firing mechanism being capable of driving a surgical fastener inserted in a distal end portion of elongated body portion to the body tissue in response to operation of the trigger mechanism.
