A magnetic apparatus (10) is provided having a bottom plate (12), a top plate (14), a first magnet guide (16), a second magnet guide (18) and a magnet member (20) which is slidable upon a slide axis (22) through apertures (40) and (54) of first magnet guide (16) and second magnet guide (18) respectively. The magnetic apparatus (10) is shown in a closed position in FIG. 1 for use in conjunction with a reed switch (86) (see FIG. 3) mounted on bottom plate (12). In the closed position magnet member (20) is close enough to the reed switch (86) to magnetically toggle reed switch (86) and thus electrically toggle electrical circuit (100). When the magnetic apparatus (10) is moved in three-dimensional space so that reference plane (24) is changed with respect to gravity line (26) to a sufficient degree, then magnet member (20) will shift along slide axis (22) toward second magnet guide (18). Thus, magnet member (20) shifts from the closed position, as shown, to an open position where the magnet member (20) is shifted to the right (see FIG. 2). Magnet member (20) is weighted so as to provide more efficacious shifting yet with a smaller scale of elements for magnetic apparatus (10). Apertures (40), (54) provide open shifting of magnet member (20) as opposed to an enclosed compartment for shifting of magnet member (20), thereby averting problems of contamination and accumulated moisture content. In the preferred embodiment, five magnetic apparatuses (10) are combined in an array (84) (see FIG. 3) to provide a combination of thirty-two possible gravitational orientations, thus allowing an extremely gravitationally sensitive array which can be used in a system (110) (see FIG. 10) requiring a gravitation-detection component.

Magnetic apparatus for actuating a reed switch and associated system

A unit train (10) includes a base unit (12). Base unit (12) generates a clock signal and a bit signal. Base unit (12) also receives and interprets a data signal. Unit train (10) also includes a plurality of subunits (14) serially coupled in a certain order. Each subunit (14) receives the clock signal and the bit signal. Each subunit (14) also generates a portion of the data signal. Additionally each of the subunits (14) has a corresponding identity. Also included in the unit train (10) is a clock/data line (67) for relaying the clock signal and the data signal between the base unit (12) and each subunit (14).

A teaching toy (8) includes at least one receptacle (12). Receptacle (12) has a conductive signal-out pad and a plurality of conductive code-in pads (46) at an inner surface. At least one remote unit (14) is included which is removable from receptacle (12). Remote unit (14) has multiple sides and a conductive signal-in pad for capacitive coupling to the signal-out pad. Remote unit (14) also has at least one conductive code-out pad (50) electrically connected to the signal-in pad for capacitive coupling to one of the code-in pads (46). The signal-in pad and the code-out pad (50) are disposed on a first side of unit (14). Remote unit (14) also has a datum disposed on a second side. A processor (20) is included for generating a control signal to the signal-out pad and detecting data signals from the code-in pads (46). Processor (20) associates the data signals with and generates data representing the datum. A memory (22) is included which stores instructions for operating processor (20). An interface device (27) receives the data from processor (20) and communicates the datum to a user.

Apparatus and method for teaching

A detector assembly (20) detects motion by utilizing a plurality of motion detectors (22-28), each detector having a first finger (40) and a second finger (42 ). First finger (40 ) has a signal line (36) on the inner surface (32) and second finger (42) has a ground line (38) disposed on another portion of inner surface (32). Spacer (46) keeps fingers (40) and (42) out of physical contact in the normal position so that there is an open circuit between signal line (36) and ground line (38). When a moving object (50) strikes first finger (40), first finger (40) is deflected downward so that first finger (40) and second finger (42) make physical contact at contact point (48), thereby establishing a closed circuit between signal line (36) and ground line (38). In this fashion a detection pulse is generated. The substrate (30) of detector assembly (20 ) is made of a resilient, flexible material such as a synthetic resin, for enhanced sensitivity. Due to the enhanced sensitivity of detector assembly (20), the motion of objects (50) can be detected even though such motion is random, i.e. the motion of objects does not have to be precisely controlled in the vicinity of detector assembly (20).

Motion detector and associated system

An electronic learning device (10) uses keys (12a-e) which self-generate an electric signal responsive to a key being pressed. The electric signal is sufficient to drive a display (18) for indicating the correctness of the response. Cards (14) provide a query and a plurality of possible answers, each possible answer associated with one of the keys (12a-e). A correct answer is encoded on the card.
