Materials and methods for immobilizing bioactive molecules, stem and other precursor cells, and other agents of therapeutic value in surgical sutures and other tissue scaffold devices are described herein. Broadly drawn to the integration and incorporation of bioactive materials into suture constructs, tissue scaffolds and medical devices, the present invention has particular utility in the development of novel systems that enable medical personnel performing surgical and other medical procedures to utilize and subsequently reintroduce bioactive materials extracted from a patient (or their allogenic equivalents) to a wound or target surgical site.

Surgical sutures incorporated with stem cells or other bioactive materials

Described herein is a novel drug delivery assembly having particular applicability to the field of orthopedic and surgical medicine. The devices and assemblies described herein enable the efficient application and retention of potentially expensive therapeutic materials to very specific locations, particularly those associated with voids in bone and tissue. One particularly unique aspect of the present invention involves the introduction of constructs which promote the retention of therapeutic material in the target area of application for beneficial use, for example by forming a proximal barrier that prevents leakage of the therapeutic material out of the target area. Additionally, the present invention provides unique devices and methods for surgical introduction of such constructs. The present invention finds particular application in connection with introduction of stem and progenitor cells, bioactive molecules and bone scaffold materials in conjunction with bone voids and with the use of cannulated implants, such as bone screws (also surgical screws) and pins. The present invention also has beneficial use in the delivery of cancer drugs, antimicrobials, bone cements and other therapeutic materials.

Constructs and methods for immobilizing stem and other precursor cells, as well as other bioactive materials of therapeutic value on the surfaces of medical devices, such as bone, cartilage, spinal and tooth implants, are described herein. The present invention has broad application in the incorporation of bioactive and therapeutic materials in or on a medical implant or other interventional device, having particular value in enabling the real-time, utilization by medical personnel of bioactive materials extracted from the patient and subsequently reintroduced and immobilized in an implant device.

In accordance with preferred embodiments of the invention, a method (and corresponding apparatus) is provided for deducing the location of one or more items or objects to be monitored. In exemplary embodiments, the method (and corresponding apparatus) is implemented in RFID (radio frequency identification) applications (e.g., reading RFID tags at 13.56 MHz and approximately 900 MHz) by deducing the location of an item associated with a unique RFID tag in one or more areas of detection covered by multiple RFID reader antennae.

Disclosed herein are glycosylated amphiphilic molecules composed of hydrophobic 'tails' and hydrophilic 'heads' that self align to form a membrane at the interface of a polar solvent and a non-polar liquid or a solid. The present invention is directed to a solid state membrane, typically a thin film, composed of a non-polar solid material having the hydrophobic &#x201c;tail&#x201d; of a glycosylated amphiphilic molecule embedded in or linked to its surface such that the hydrophilic &#x201c;head&#x201d; protrudes from the solid surface and presents useful properties to the surrounding environment. A membrane or film in accordance with the present invention is produced when a non-polar liquid, in the presence of a polar solvent and an amphiphilic biological compound, undergoes a transformation from liquid to solid, through thermal, chemical or radiative means, with the resultant effect that the amphiphilic molecule is affixed or &#x201c;locked&#x201d; to the surface, more particularly the hydrophobic ends of the amphiphilic compounds are mechanically or chemically linked to or embedded in the non-polar solid. The membrane and micelles produced therefrom remain stable even in the absence of the polar solvent, thereby allowing the hydrophilic components of the amphiphilic compounds to present useful properties at the surface thereof.
