A method is disclosed for forming a stable, water-in-oil emulsion phase containing a polymeric emulsifier. The addition of an animal oil or fatty acid additive enhances the long-term stability of the emulsion phase following homogenization.

Emulsion phase having improved stability

The present invention relates to a water-based explosive having detonation properties similar to dynamite. It comprises an emulsion explosive formed by blending an emulsion phase with cast particles. The emulsion phase comprises a continuous organic liquid fuel phase, a discontinuous inorganic oxidizer solution phase and an emulsifier. The cast particles comprise a mixture of sodium perchlorate, water and diethylene glycol. The cast particles can be added to the emulsion phase before the particles are completely cured and thus before they reach final sensitivty.

The invention comprises a cap-sensitive, cast, solid explosive composition usable as a booster or primer and as a seismic explosive composition. The cast, solid explosive composition contains dispersed microballoons which impart important and surprising advantages.

Cast explosive composition with microballoons

The present invention relates to a cast explosive composition and other energetic compositions such as propellants. (As used herein, the term 'explosive' also shall include other energetic compositions such as propellants.) More particularly, the invention relates to a cast explosive composition which is initially formed as a stable, fluid, water-containing, water-in-oil emulsion explosive and which thereafter solidifies upon the addition of a desiccant and/or emulsion destabilizing agent. As used herein, the term 'desiccant' means a water reacting, absorbing or adsorbing agent. One method of the present invention is the formulating of the cast explosive composition by adding the desiccant and/or destabilizing agent to a stable emulsion to cause the emulsion to solidify. Alternatively, a desiccant can be included in the aqueous phase of the stable emulsion which then is solidified by the addition of an emulsion destabilizing agent. A further method relates to the loading of a container with the cast explosive composition. As used herein, the terms 'cast' and 'solidify' refer to an unflowable or relatively unextrudable mass of finely knitted oxidizer salt crystals which have crystallized from an aqueous solution.

Cast explosive composition and method

The chloramine T procedure is employed to provide radioiodinated T.sub.3 and radioiodinated T.sub.4 from T.sub.3 and T.sub.4, respectively, at specified pHs and mole ratios to provide for long shelf life. T.sub.3 is also radioiodinated to high specific activity radioiodinated T.sub.4, and purified after a specified waiting period to remove radioactive non-antigenic contaminants and thereby provide a long shelf life.

A supported receptor for use in an assay for a ligand in which the solid support includes a water insoluble polymer including at least one functional group which is either carboxyl, isothiocyanate, N-hydroxysuccinimide, imidazolide, bromoacetyl, maleimide, or diazomethylene, with the receptor being covalently linked to the support through the functional group. The preferred support is a particulate support including an impervious non-porous core and an outer porous coating having the water insoluble polymer, including the aforesaid functional groups, adhering thereto.

Supported receptor and use thereof in an assay

An improved radioimmunoassey procedure involves the use of an improved reusable immunoadsorbent through which a sample of an antigen and radioactive labelled antigen is flowed to form a bound and unbound fraction. The bound fraction is releasably coupled to the immunoadsorbent which includes a solid particulate substrate to which antibodies, specific to the antigen, are covalently bonded by reaction between the carboxyl or amine group of the antibody and a group such as an acyl azide, carbonate, thiocarbonate, polythiol, isocyanate, epoxide and chlorothioformate group, for example, reacted on the substrate. The substrate includes a porous refractory material having at least one polymeric material bonded thereto as a barrier and to which is linked one of the above groups for reaction with the carboxyl or amine group of the antibody. The antigen bound to the immunoadsorbent is stoichiometrically released by an eluting solvent and the immunoadsorbent is reused. Concentration of the antigen is determined with reference to one of the bound or unbound fractions, or both.
