An electro-magnetic interference suppressor includes a segmented array of ceramic feed-through capacitors, and a conductive fence which is attached to the capacitor array about its periphery. The fence is attached to a ground of a printed circuit board such that a generally planar surface of the segmented array lies adjacent to a planar surface of the printed circuit board. The suppressor provides an effective filter for eliminating unwanted noise occurring in electronic circuitry. The fence, in one embodiment, is surface mounted and soldered to a surface ground pad of the printed circuit board. In another embodiment, the fence includes a ground pin which extends into printed circuit board for contact with the circuit board ground. The ground pin may be soldered in place or may include a compliant section for press-fit reception within a through-hole. Conductive pins extend through respective ones of the feed-through capacitors, and in one embodiment ends of these pins abut a surface circuit pad of the printed circuit board. In other embodiments the ends of the conductive pins extend into receiving apertures in the circuit board where they are either press-fit or soldered in place.

Connectors with capacitors or resistors built in are very expensive and a custom design requires a considerable lead time. By building a circuit in modular form so that it connects to a standard cylindrical connector, both the cost and lead time are reduced drastically. Modules containing a variety of frequently used circuitry can be kept in inventory for at-will and immediate association with any standard circular connector, as desired. By having a variety of adapter collars in stock that mate with various kinds and constructions of cylindrical connectors, the suppression modules may be connected to a variety of differently constructed connectors. Many different configurations for the electrical circuitry in the module are possible. Many different configurations of the circuit module and interface collar are possible and can be designed to accommodate almost any connector configuration. By utilizing a terminating module as well, the connector with its circuit module attached can be utilized like and appears to be a single connector. A metal oxide varistor in compact plate form is uniquely suited for use in multi-pin connector bodies or in circuit modules.

Feed-through capacitor of the type for use in filters and the like and including discoidal ceramic capacitors arranged in stacked relationship and electrically connected in series. Series arrangement of the discoidal capacitors prevents shorting through the feed-through capacitor in the event of failure of one of the discoidal capacitors therein and results in substantially improved insertion loss characteristics when compared to feedthrough capacitors having a single discoidal capacitor.
