A system of delivering power by light, through a fiber. A system for remote operation of an instrument includes a fiber-coupled power laser source, which has an output fiber with a first core diameter. A fiber taper having a wide end and a narrow end, is used to connect the fiber-coupled power laser source to a system fiber having a second core diameter less than the first core diameter. The system fiber delivers optical power to the remote module, in which a fiber-coupled photovoltaic assembly having an input fiber connected to the system fiber, converts the received light to electrical power. The photovoltaic assembly has a first electrical output and a second electrical output, and the photovoltaic assembly is configured to supply power at a first voltage at the first electrical output, and to supply power at a second voltage at the second electrical output.

Power by-light architecture for optically remote analog-to-digital converters

In an analog, fiber-based signal distribution system, a periodic electrical signal is frequency-multiplied by a factor of N, is converted to an optical signal, is optically amplified, is split among one or more optical fibers, is delivered by fiber to one or more remote units, is converted back to an electrical signal, is frequency-divided by the factor of N back to its original frequency, and can be used to generate synchronized clock signals at the remote units. The optical amplifier imparts a phase noise that is relatively independent of frequency, so that the phase noise contribution from the optical amplifier is advantageously decreased when the frequency divider reduces the frequency of the electrical signal. Compared to a distribution system that does not increase, then decrease, the frequency by a factor of N, the phase noise contribution from the optical amplifier is reduced by 20 log 10(N).

Analog optical fiber-based signal distribution system and method

Embodiments of the concepts, systems, and techniques disclosed herein are directed to an optically powered, direct-sampling, analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that provides fully formatted, serialized data for transmission over optical fiber from a remote location. Such a system and method of use thereof requires less electrical power, fewer components, and less complexity than previous systems and methods and achieves an all-optical-fiber implementation that provides complete electrical and electromagnetic interference (EMI) isolation for the remote ADC. These concepts, systems, and techniques simplify the overall remote sensing architecture by locating the ADC near the sensor and transferring pure digitized signals back to the processor.
