A knockout device for removing a taphole sleeve from a furnace wall. The device is comprised of a pneumatic hammer having an elongated body and a weight reciprocally movable by air pressure along the body. The body has a first end with an air inlet for receiving air under pressure from an external source and a second end. A metal block is attached to the second end of the body. The block has a planar surface dimensioned to rest upon an upper end of a taphole sleeve. A locating pin extends from the block. The pin is dimensioned to be received within an axial bore defined by the taphole sleeve. A housing surrounds the hammer and defines a cavity therearound. The housing has openings therethrough to allow air from the hammer to vent from the cavity.

Taphole knockout device

A taphole assembly for a vessel containing a molten solid. The assembly is comprised of a tubular element formed of a refractory material. The tubular element has a continuous passage extending therethrough along a first axis. A socket block formed of a plurality of mating refractory components is provided to hold the tubular element. The socket block has a first convex cylindrical surface on one side thereof and a second convex cylindrical surface on an opposite side thereof. The first and the second cylindrical surfaces are defined about a second axis extending through the socket block. The socket block has an inner cavity dimensioned to receive and to capture the tubular element. A first rectangular saddle block has a first concave recess formed therein that is dimensioned to match and to receive the first convex surface on the socket block. A second rectangular saddle block has a second concave recess formed therein that is dimensioned to match and to receive said second convex surface on the socket block.

A refractory pour tube with a wear resistant plate includes a one-piece composite member formed of different refractory compositions, a casing disposed around a portion of the member, and castable refractory material disposed within the casing. The composite member has a tubular body portion defining an interior bore and an end portion defining a flat plate surface including an opening communicating with the bore. The end portion is formed of a hard refractory composition resistant to abrasion, while the tubular body portion is formed of a refractory composition resistant to thermal shock. First and second castable refractory materials are poured into the casing to form a refractory ring surrounding the flat plate surface and a refractory sleeve surrounding the tubular body portion. The refractory ring cooperates with the flat plate surface to form a hard, wear resistant plate suitable for use in a sliding valve assembly. The refractory sleeve insulates the casing from heat and, along with the refractory ring, secures the casing to the composite member. Manufacture of the pour tube requires minimal machining and is simplified and less expensive than formation of prior art pour tubes.

A nozzle for discharging molten metal from a vessel includes a porous inner sleeve surrounded by an impervious outer sleeve. The outer sleeve is cast in-situ around the inner sleeve, and is bonded in-situ to the outer surface of the inner sleeve in bonding areas adjacent its opposite ends. A gas chamber is defined between the inner and outer sleeves for receiving pressurized gas which passes through the inner sleeve to inhibit clogging and deterioration of the inner sleeve by molten metal and impurities. The gas chamber is formed by placing a heat fluidizable material around a portion of the inner sleeve before the outer sleeve is cast thereon. After casting of the outer sleeve, the assembly is heated to a temperature for fluidizing the fluidizable material which then escapes through the porous sleeve to leave a hollow gas chamber.
