An interactive exercise pad system ( ) receives exercise data ( ) from a user ( ) stepping on and off of an exercise pad ( ). The exercise data ( ) is optionally pre-processed in a data acquisition unit , before being communicated to a communications port ( ) of a computer ( ). The computer ( ) obtains data files ( ) which have been pre-stored on media ( ). The data files ( ) include video files ( ), optional audio files ( ), and table files ( ) of location and terrain information. The video files ( ) and the table files ( ) are collected from a real exercise course. The computer ( ) processes the exercise data ( ) and the data files ( ) to playback the video files ( ) and the optional audio files ( ) so that the user ( ) experiences a realistic simulation of the real exercise course.

A marker applying device (50) for a substrate (14) having a plurality of markers (70) having magnetic material (74) in a backing (72) of the markers (70), and an adhesive (76) on a front surface (78) of the backing (72), a marker retainer (62) having a relative weak magnetic force at spaced locations (64) for releasably retaining the markers (70) at the spaced locations (64) in a configuration with the adhesive (76) facing outwardly from the retainer (62), an electromagnet (88) positioned with the substrate (14) being intermediate the electromagnet (88) and retainer (62), and the markers (70) being sequentially positioned by the retainer (62) in a configuration with the adhesive (76) facing the electromagnet (88) and substrate (14), and a device (CPU) for electrically pulsing the electromagnet (88) to produce a relatively strong magnetic force, such that the electromagnet (88) removes the markers (70) from the retainer (62) and deposits them onto the substrate (14) such that the adhesive (76) on the markers (70) retains the markers (70) on the substrate (14).

A continuous web printing press (100) having a control system (202) for automatically identifying which one of a plurality of paper webs (108, 120) is running through which one of a plurality of compensators (146, 148) is provided. First and second marking devices (138, 140) apply reference marks (142, 144) on the respective webs (108, 120) to uniquely identify each web (108, 120). Preferably, the reference marks (142, 144) are comprised of a magnetized material, such as a magnetized label. A sensor (154, 156) is positioned at each of the compensators (146, 148) for sensing the reference marks (142, 144) located on the web (108, 120) running through the compensator (146, 148) to automatically identify which web (108, 120) is running through which compensator (146, 148). The marks (142, 144) on the web (108, 120) are preferably positioned on the webs (108, 120) to uniquely identify the webs (108, 120). A computer circuit (200) uses this information to control the path lengths of the webs (108, 120) via the compensators (146, 148). A method is also provided for automatically identifying which web (108, 120) is running through which compensator (146, 148).
