Compositions are provided that have at least two of three active ingredients. The active ingredients maybe a salt having a cation NC8-C16 alkanoyl-L di-basic amino acid —C1-C4 alkyl ester, a glycerol monoester of a fatty acid and a sugar ester of a fatty acid. The compositions are useful in methods of killing or inhibiting planktonic bacteria or fungi and bacteria or fungi embedded in a biofilm and prevention of biofilm formation on surfaces. The composition may further comprise a hydrogel and a benefit agent such as an antibiotic that can be solubilized by the hydrogel and supplied to the biofilm matrix by the active ingredients of the composition. Devices such as chronic wound coverings coated with the composition are also provided. Methods of preserving products with the composition are also provided.

Biofilm penetrating compositions and methods

Compositions are provided that have at least two of three active ingredients. The active ingredients maybe a salt having a cation NC8-C6 alkanoyl-L di-basic amino acid &#x2014;C1-C4 alkyl ester, a glycerol monoester of a fatty acid and a sugar ester of a fatty acid. The compositions are useful in methods of killing or inhibiting planktonic bacteria or fungi and bacteria or fungi embedded in a biofilm and prevention of biofilm formation on surfaces. The composition may further comprise a hydrogel and a benefit agent such as an antibiotic that can be solubilized by the hydrogel and supplied to the biofilm matrix by the active ingredients of the composition. Devices such as chronic wound coverings coated with the composition are also provided. Methods of preserving products with the composition are also provided.

Methods of making coated pet food kibble and the kibble product by coating kibble with a composition that include at least one of: (i) lecithin and chicken fat; (ii) lecithin, a glycerol monoester of a fatty acid, a sugar monoester of a fatty acid, and chicken fat; (iii) lecithin, N&#x2014;(C-C) acyl arginine alkyl (C-C) ester, and chicken fat; or (iv) N&#x2014;(C-C) acyl arginine alkyl (C-C) ester-thymol and chicken fat. When the pet food kibble coated with a composition as described above, exhibits amounts ofsp. that are reduced by about 99%. This reduction is effective for at least 60 days post coating when compared to pet food kibble coated with a composition lacking one of (i)-(iv). The compositions are also used in a method for treating raw beef or poultry prior to grinding where the ground meat exhibits amounts ofsp. that are reduced by about 99%.

A controlled release biocidal salt of a first component comprises a cation of a N-(C-C) alkanoyl di-basic amino acid alkyl (C-C) ester cationic biocidal molecule and a second component comprising an anion of a monomeric anionic molecule having insignificant biocidal activity. The salt is characterized such that when the salt is exposed to an aqueous medium, the salt partially dissolves thereby releasing biocidal ions in an amount sufficient to exceed the MIC or MBC of a target bacteria being controlled, and further characterized as leaving a residual reservoir of undissolved salt capable of releasing more biocidal ions as the salt is consumed or otherwise removed from the environment encompassing the target bacteria. The preferred cationic biocidal molecule comprises N-lauroyl-L-arginine ethyl ester ('LAE').

Controlled release biocidal salts

A controlled release biocidal salt of a first component comprises a cation of a N&#x2014;(C-C) alkanoyl di-basic amino acid alkyl (C-C) ester cationic biocidal molecule and a second component comprising an anion of a monomeric anionic molecule having insignificant biocidal activity. Synergistic antimicrobial compositions are provided by combining effective amounts of N-long chain alkanoyl di basic amino acid alkyl ester salts with glycerol monofatty acid esters resulting more effective anti-microbials and food preservatives.

Synergistic antimicrobial agents

A polymeric biocidal salt is prepared from two components. The first component comprises a biocidal anionic or cationic monomeric, dendrimeric or polymeric ion. The second component comprises a dendrimeric or polymeric anion or cation having insignificant biocidal activity and a number average molecular weight of at least about 500. The second component will be cationic in nature when the first component is anionic in nature and anionic in nature when the first component is cationic in nature. Polymeric biocidal salts

A method for cleaning, benefiting, or deodorizing skin or hair utilizing a body wash, skin cleaner, soap, shampoo or deodorizer formulation containing a controlled release skin benefit or deodorizing salt, a hydrophilic moisturizing polymer and surfactants is described. The method imparts benefits or deodorizing agents to the skin or hair and maintains effective levels for an extended period.

Deodorizing and skin cleaning

This invention pertains to dental care compositions with antimicrobial benefits. In particular, the invention provides for compositions of oral tissue-adherent salts that release biocidal ions on a controlled release basis and thereby provide and maintain an essentially uniform concentration of biocidal ions above the MBC or MIC of the target bacteria at the site of application in the mouth for an extended period of time. The compositions are useful for treating or preventing oral diseases resulting from bacteria, fungal or yeast infections, such as caries, gingivitis, periodontal disease and candidiasis.

Compositions for dental care

This invention discloses a method of preservation of a food product comprising the step of adding 1) a first component comprising between 10 ppm and 1% of a biocidal salt of N-(C1-C22) alkanoyl di-basic amino acid alkyl (C1-C22) ester cationic biocidal molecule with an anionic counterion, and 2) a second component comprising from 10 ppm to 1% by weight an acyl monoglyceride, directly to a food product. The preferred cationic biocidal molecule comprises N-lauroyl-L-arginine ethyl ester ('LAE'). The invention also discloses the method of preservation of a food product using salts of a N-(C1-C22) alkanoyl di-basic amino acid alkyl (C1-C22) ester cationic biocidal molecule and an anionic counterion with or without a monoglyceride of a fatty acid, whereby the packaging film is compounded with the salts and the optional monoglyceride of a fatty acid.

Methods of preservation

The combination of N-long chain alkanoyl di basic amino acid alkyl ester salts with glycerol monofatty acid esters results in biocidal synergy and the extension of cidal activity of the di basic amino acid derivative for a variety of antimicrobial applications like oral care, wound care, dermatological care, animal care, and cosmetic applications. N-C8-C14-long chain alkanoyl-L-arginine alkyl (C1-C4 short chain) ester salts with glycerol monofatty acid esters (C8-C14) are very effective as antimicrobial agents for hospital use particularly as a coating for surgical drapes, covers, walls, trays, table tops, gurneys, or the like. Other uses include the treatment of HSV-1 (fever sore) and as a microbicide when using the combination of the di basic amino acid ester derivative with glycerol monofatty acid esters for preventing HIV and STD's.

Antimicrobial agents

An inexpensive, easily available, and convenient method of treating or preventing a virus infection is provided. The present invention relates to a method for the treatment or prevention of virus infections using polybiguanide-based compounds administering a therapeutically effective amount of a compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. The invention relies on the unique biochemical reaction in which polybiguanide-based compounds interfere with the spread of virus within or between organisms. The compositions and formulations described in the present invention are effective means to reduce the infectivity of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), and human herpes simplex viruses, and also to kill the causative organisms of many other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
