A process for forming a strong, low-density proppant, which process includes heating pumice particulates, or shaped agglomerates thereof, so as to form heat-treated pumice particulates, or heat-treated, shaped pumice agglomerates, having an apparent density of 2.4 or less and a crush resistance of no more than 10% fines at 4000 psi. Proppants, and well treatment fluids comprising proppants, meeting these characteristics and processes for treating subterranean formations using fluids which include such proppants are also described.

Methods and compositions that protect cement compositions from corrosion, particularly from wet carbon dioxide, are provided. A soluble salt additive is provided to react with reaction products generated during the reactions that occur when cement is exposed to wet carbon dioxide. The soluble salt reacts to form an insoluble salt that forms a protective layer on the surface of the cement that protects it from further corrosion from exposure to wet carbon dioxide.

Method of reducing corrosion in cement

A corrosion inhibitor package containing an acetylenic amine or acetylenic alcohol enables a sulfur-free method for protecting metal tubulars and equipment. The package has particular applicability in the protection of carbon steel tubulars in high density brines at elevated temperatures. The corrosion inhibitor package may contain a transition metal oxide as a corrosion inhibitor intensifier.

The permeability of a subterranean formation is improved by introducing into the formation a water-in-oil emulsion. Unwanted particulates deposited in the formation during the production of oil are dissolved or loosened by the outer phase of the emulsion and dispersed in the aqueous phase.

Method for treating a subterranean formation with water-in-oil emulsion

Fluid producing wells may be treated with a water-in-oil emulsion for the removal or inhibition of unwanted solid particulates, including pipe dope, asphaltenes and paraffins. Such emulsions are of particular applicability in the displacement of oil base drilling muds and/or residues from such muds from producing wells. The water-in-oil emulsions may optionally contain a dispersing agent as well as a surfactant.
