A cost effective, structural building set, suitable as a toy, uses post connectors () comprised of a post () with attached disks (), or similar devices that insert into cutouts () in geometric shaped component parts (). More than one component part can be connected to the same post connector, and such component parts can rotate relative to the post axis. The connector design allows construction of stable structures of many sizes, shapes, and types, and readily facilitates hinging between different sections of such assembled structures.

Versatile robust construction toy

A connector assembly has a cable assembly, plug assembly and a socket assembly. The socket assembly is a female member which is received within an opening at the front face of a panel. The plug assembly is a male member which then engages the socket at the front face of the panel. The cable assembly connects the cables carrying optical fibers to the plug assembly. As the socket assembly receives the plug assembly, doors on the respective housings open and ferrule carriers carried by the socket and plug assemblies mate. The plug assembly has a movable front end which permits the fibers to move in both horizontal and vertical directions.

High density front panel optical interconnect

A connector assembly is provided that includes a front end mating connector which is received in a socket. The front end mating connector includes a pluggable transceiver, latching mechanism, and passive optical connector. Standard optical ribbon fibers are provided that plug into the passive connector, which in turn plugs into the transceiver. The passive connector and the transceiver are coupled together by the latching mechanism. The coupled connector then plugs into the socket in a first direction. The socket includes electrical connector wafers. As the transceiver is plugged into the socket, circuit boards within the transceiver move in a second direction to engage the wafers. The transceiver has a circuit that converts the optical signals received by the receiver ribbons into electrical signals that are recognized by the wafers and passed to the circuit board. The circuit also converts the electrical signals received from the circuit board through the wafers in the socket into optical signals for transmission by the optical ribbon fibers.

High density pluggable electrical and optical connector

A ferrule assembly for terminating at least one fiber of a ribbon cable in a ferrule, where the ferrule assembly is disposable in a housing of an optical connector, is provided. The ferrule assembly includes the ferrule having a mating face, at least one groove for receiving the fiber and at least one through-hole. The ferrule assembly also includes an alignment member holder having at least one alignment member and providing a first channel for the ribbon cable, the alignment member being insertable in the through-hole of the ferrule and having a first length such that an end of the alignment member extends beyond the mating face of the ferrule when the ferrule assembly is assembled. The ferrule assembly further includes a carrier body attachable to the alignment member holder, the carrier body having at least two biasing member capture portions, each of the biasing member capture portions providing an opening for capturing a biasing member therein when the alignment member holder and the carrier body are attached. The carrier body further provides a second channel for the ribbon cable, the second channel being disposed between the biasing member capture portions of the carrier body and being contiguous with the first channel when the alignment member holder and the carrier body are attached.

Ferrule assembly and methods thereof

An optical fiber interconnection system with a small number of modular components that can be configured for simple construction in many configurations. The system includes connector housings. Optical fibers are installed into the housings on ferrule carriers. The housings are brought together in adapters. Different styles of adapters are available for different applications, such as panel or backplane configurations. However, the same housing and ferrule carriers can be used in any style of adapter. Also, different ferrule carriers are provided for single fiber ferrules and multi-fiber ferrules. Either style of ferrule carrier can be used in a housing and adapter. A ferrule carrier for single fiber ferrules can be modified to provide fine alignment features with the addition of a cap, allowing the same style ferrule carrier to be used in both halves of a mated connector assembly.

Modular fiber optic connector system

An optical connector system assembled from modular components. These components include connector modules that position ferrules for mating and providing fine alignment to fibers. The modules are assembled to support members to form connectors of various sizes. Mounting modules are attached to the support members. Various shaped mounting modules are provided, allowing connectors to be assembled for various configurations, such as a matrix configuration, a parallel board-to-board configuration or a panel mount configuration.

Ferrule assembly and methods therefor

In one embodiment of a fiber optic connection system of the present invention, there is provided a first fiber optic connector attachable to a first printed circuit board and a second fiber optic connector attachable to a second printed circuit board and mateable to the first fiber optic connector. The first fiber optic connector has separable first wafer modules, each of which hold at least one optical fiber, and separable first latching modules removably attached to the separable first wafer modules. The second fiber optic connector includes separable second wafer modules, each of which hold at least one optical fiber, and separable second latching modules removably attached to the separable second wafer modules. The separable second latching modules are engageable to the separable first latching modules to mate the first and second fiber optic connectors. Although not required, the fiber optic connection system can also include a first module carrier, to which is attachable the separable first wafer modules and the separable first latching modules, and a second module carrier, to which is attachable the separable second wafer modules and the separable second latching modules.

Modular fiber optic connection system

An optical connector assembly including an adapter. Each piece of the connector includes a ferrule carrier that is mounted in a housing. An adapter is used to align the connector housings. The adapter has a latching member that includes an exposed surface. The surface is accessible such that it can be pressed by a human operator to unlatch a connector inserted into the adapter. When pressed, the latching member slides so that latching features on the member slide clear of complementary features on the connector housing, thereby allowing the connector to release from the adapter. The connector also includes visually distinctive chips that can be inserted in the ferrule carriers or the adapter. By matching the chips in the different components, an assembler can easily recognize the appropriate ferrule carrier to be inserted the appropriate adapter position.

Optical connector assembly with features for ease of use

An optical interconnection system, particularly useful in a backplane arrangement in an electronic assembly. The interconnection system includes 'dual-use' protective covers for protection from damage and/or cleaning within backplane and daughter card style connectors. The protective covers are modular for easy use. Some versions contain adhesive members that can remove contaminates from various portions of the connector assembly. The protective covers can be inserted into a backplane connector of an electronic assembly using a tool or as part of a 'dummy board.'

A system cleans a set of optical connectors. The system includes a fluid source, a vacuum source, a support member which defines a cleaning device edge, and a set of cleaning devices. Each cleaning device includes (i) a fluid intake member which connects to the fluid source, (ii) a fluid output member which connects to the vacuum source, and (iii) a cleaning head which connects to the fluid intake member and the fluid output member. Each cleaning device is disposed along the cleaning device edge of the support member. The set of cleaning devices is configured to (a) align over a set of optical interfaces of the set of optical connectors, (b) direct fluid (e.g., gas, gaseous snow, etc.) from the fluid source toward the set of optical interfaces, and (c) draw the directed fluid away from the set of optical interfaces and toward the vacuum source.

Methods and apparatus for cleaning optical connectors

A module houses a set of fiber optic interfaces. The module includes a fiber optic interface holder, which is configured to hold the set of fiber optic interfaces, and a shroud coupled to the fiber optic interface holder. The shroud is configured to move relative to the fiber optic interface holder along an axis defined by the fiber optic interface holder such that, when the fiber optic interface holder holds the set of fiber optic interfaces, the shroud (i) protects the set of fiber optic interfaces when the shroud is in a first location along the axis defined by the fiber optic interface holder, and (ii) exposes the set of fiber optic interfaces when the shroud is in a second location along the axis defined by the fiber optic interface holder.

Techniques for forming fiber optic connections in a modularized manner

A latch and release system for a connector disposable within a mating receptacle is provided, where the connector includes a body having a latch portion and a movable release portion, with the movable release portion having a biasing member. The latch and release system also includes an engaging member attached to the mating receptacle, with the engaging member having an engaging portion to engage the latch portion of the connector body when the connector is disposed in the mating receptacle. An abutment portion of the mating receptacle abuts the movable release portion of the connector body when the connector is disposed in the mating receptacle to cause the biasing member of the movable release portion to be biased. The latch and release system further includes a release member having an actuatable portion, where the actuatable portion is actuatable by a user to cause the engaging portion of the engaging member to disengage from the latch portion of the connector body and to cause the biasing member of the movable release portion to become unbiased, whereby this unbiasing of the biasing member creates a force to automatically eject the connector from the mating receptacle.
