Systems are described for converting the angular position of a shaft or an axle of a rotary motor to an analog or a digital code indicative of the angular position. The systems may include a magnetic disk encoded with first magnetic transitions and second magnetic transitions, where the first magnetic transitions are on a first circumference of the magnetic disk, the second magnetic transitions are on a second circumference of the magnetic disk, the first magnetic transitions represent regions on the magnetic disk, and the second magnetic transitions represent locations on the magnetic disk within each of the regions. The systems may include a first sensor to detect a region based on the first magnetic transitions and a second sensor to detect a location based on the second magnetic transitions. The systems may also include a decoder to identify an absolute location on the magnetic disk based on the region detected by the first sensor and the location detected by the second sensor.

An apparatus includes a force bias element coupled to a plant in a vehicle. The force bias element has a first bandwidth. An active suspension includes a linear electromagnetic actuator located within an interior of the force bias element. The linear electromagnetic actuator has a second bandwidth that is higher than the first bandwidth and is coupled to the plant.

A position sensing system includes a member movable along a path, the member having an elongated magnet extending along the path, the magnetic field orientation of the elongated magnet being at an angle with respect to the path. A sensor determines a position of the member along the path based on a measurement of a magnetic field generated by the elongated magnet.

Position measurement using magnetic fields

To determine the relative position of movable portions of an assembly, a first magnetic device is coupled to a first portion of the assembly. The first magnetic device has a sensing surface with a number of magnetic poles that provide a magnetization state transition location. An absolute position sensor with a two-state output is coupled to the assembly adjacent the first magnetic device. The output state changes when a magnetization state transition of the first magnetic device moves past the absolute position sensor. A second magnetic device is coupled to the assembly. The second magnetic device creates a cyclically-varying magnetic field proximate its sensing surface. An incremental position sensor is coupled to the assembly adjacent the second magnetic device, and has an output that varies continuously relative to magnetic field angle over at least a portion of one cycle of the cyclically-varying magnetic field of the second magnetic device.

Absolute position sensing

A position sensing system for positioning a linear motor that includes a stator and an armature having magnets, the armature moving relative to the stator along a path. A sensor determines a position of the armature based on measurements of a magnetic field generated by the magnets of the armature.

A method and apparatus for aligning and securing a spindle shaft and actuator shaft in a low-density gas-filled hard disk drive and independent of the disk drive cover is provided. A capture plate is positioned above the memory disk(s) and is secured to the base plate. The spindle shaft and, optionally, the actuator shaft are secured between the base plate and capture plate. The capture plate may be configured to reduce vibration. This structure eliminates use of the cover to secure the spindle shaft and actuator shaft and, thereby, eliminates a potential pathway for low-density gas to escape. The capture plate may also be configured to reduce air turbulence created by the rotating disk and reduce track misregistration of the read/write element(s).

The upper voice coil motor magnet assembly (') of a disk drive (&#x2032;) is magnetically aligned with the lower voice coil motor magnet assembly (&#x2032;) using an alignment fixture (). The alignment fixture () engages the upper voice coil motor magnet assembly (&#x2032;) and lifts the same into a suspended position above the lower voice coil motor magnet assembly (&#x2032;). In this suspended condition, the alignment fixture () allows the magnetic field to move the upper voice coil motor magnet assembly (&#x2032;) within the horizontal dimension to a magnetically aligned position with the lower voice coil motor magnet assembly (&#x2032;). Thereafter, the alignment fixture () lowers the upper voice coil motor magnet assembly (&#x2032;) to a position where the same is again supported above the lower voice coil motor magnet assembly (&#x2032;).
