A line producing system includes an input beam of radiant energy that enters a side of a low cost, radiant energy altering device. The radiant energy emerges from the light altering device radiating in a nearly 360 degree disc pattern forming a ring of ever expanding light.

Light altering device

An electronic display device includes a two-dimensional array of point charge sources, which are aligned with a plurality of apertures defined in a substrate. Associated with each aperture is a set of electrodes, including a focusing electrode, which in effect funnels the ions from the charge source into a narrow stream, and a plurality of displacing electrodes, through which the ion stream can be caused to scan over a small two-dimensional area on a phosphor. Modulating the bias on the focusing electrode can be used to control the ion stream passing through an individual aperture according to image data. The combined action of a two-dimensional array of charge sources and associated control devices can create a single composite image on the phosphor.

An ionographic printer directs a sheet of ions from a source to a charge receptor to create an electrostatic latent image thereon. An ion sheet splitting rod is positioned between the ion source and the charge receptor that splits the ion sheet into two separate streams of ions and insulating wedges serve to focus the separate ion streams into two rows of apertures in an ion control device. The ion streams pass through relatively large apertures having associated therewith a pinch electrode for narrowing the ion streams to a preselected width, and displacing electrodes for positioning the narrowed ion streams within the apertures.

A copier/printer includes a micro sized ion generating device that includes an insulated support substrate having an edge portion. An AC coronode covered by an insulated member is mounted on the edge portion of the support substrate, and a DC biased screen is on top of the insulated member, completes the device.

Micro sized ion generating device

An apparatus which transfers a developed image from a charge retentive surface to a copy sheet. The apparatus includes a transfer roller that is overcoated with an insulator and charged by either a brush, roller or a blade. The biased transfer roller is brought into contact with the back of a copy sheet thereby transferring charges that migrate through the copy sheet to enable toner transfer from the photoconductive surface to the copy sheet. A metal blade can be used to simultaneously charge and clean the transfer roller.

A corona generating device with light blocking ability in order to prevent premature exposure of film includes a dielectric support substrate, a corona producing member attached to a surface of the dielectric support member, a low voltage DC source connected to the corona producing member, a blocking electrode positioned above a surface of the dielectric support substrate opposite from the surface having the corona producing member attached thereto with the blocking electrode being adapted to block light produced by ions emitted from said corona producing member from reaching the area of the film being charged, and a high voltage AC source coupled to the corona producing member for energizing the corona producing member to emit ions therefrom.

A single piece, planar, integral corona generating device that applies a uniform charge to a charge retentive surface, including a dielectric layer, corona producing element formed on one side of the dielectric layer, reference electrode positioned on the other side of the dielectric layer, for controlling the charge level placed on the charge retentive surface by the corona producing element, for applying a low DC voltage to the reference electrode; and AC high voltage connected to the corona producing element for applying sufficient voltage to the corona producing elements so that ions are emitted from the reference electrode.

Corona generating device

A device for depositing charge on a charge retentive surface including an insulative support substrate coated with a layer of highly resistive material and a high voltage bus coupled thereto for providing a high voltage potential across the resistive material layer. The resistive charging device is positioned in contact with or in close proximity to a charge retentive surface to provide a uniform charging potential for depositing ions onto the charge retentive surface.

Resistive ion source charging device

A charging apparatus for modulating the distribution of available charge to a charge retentive surface. The charging apparatus includes a coronode wire positioned a predetermined distance away from the charge retentive surface and a charge stream dividing rod positioned between the coronode and charge retentive surface. The charge stream dividing rod has a conductive core and an insulating sheath overcoating the conductive core. Preferably, the conductive core is AC biased in order to sweep ions from the coronode wire back and forth over the charge retentive surface.

Scanning corotron

An ionographic printer bar directs a stream of ions from an integral ion source having a planar surface for emitting ions to a charge receptor to create an electrostatic latent image thereon. The ion stream passes through an aperture having associated therewith a focusing pinch electrode for narrowing the ion stream to a preselected width, displacing electrodes for positioning the narrowed ion stream within the aperture, and focus electrodes. The integral ion source is placed in propinquity in relation to the ionographic printer bar. The planar design of ion source allows reduce size of the ionographic printer bar because no support frame is needed and allow increase robustness of the ionographic printer bar which makes it easy to install in a machine and easy to clean.
