A method for managing temperatures in an aftertreatment system positioned downstream of an engine. The method includes (1) combusting a rich air/diesel mixture in a cylinder of the engine, and then (2) combusting a lean air/diesel mixture in the cylinder, in the next combustion event in the cylinder, after combusting the rich air/diesel mixture therein. The method further includes repeating steps (1) and (2) in the cylinder and basing a frequency thereof on a desired aftertreatment system temperature.

Method for managing temperatures in aftertreatment system

Disclosed is a power system having a turbocharger, a VG turbocompound turbine, and a controller. The turbocharger has a turbine coupled to a compressor, and the VG turbocompound turbine positioned downstream of the turbine relative to a direction of a flow of an exhaust gas flowing through the turbine and the VG turbocompound turbine. The controller sends a signal to adjust a geometry of the VG turbocompound turbine so as to adjust a boost level being provided by the turbocharger.

Disclosed is a power system comprising a condensation injection system positioned downstream of an EGR cooler. The condensation injection system comprises a condensation pump and a condensation injector. The condensation injector is positioned downstream of the condensation pump. The condensation pump is configured to pump the condensation to the condensation injector, and the condensation injector is configured to inject the condensation into the intake gas, the intake gas being a combination of a fresh intake gas and a recirculated portion of an exhaust gas.

A power system including an engine, an intake system, an exhaust system, and an EGR system. The intake system is coupled to the engine and receives a fresh intake gas, the fresh intake gas having a fresh intake gas pressure. The exhaust system is coupled to the engine and expels an exhaust gas, the exhaust gas having an exhaust gas pressure. The EGR system is positioned so as to couple the intake system and the exhaust system. The EGR system does not comprise an EGR cooler. The EGR system bypasses periodically a portion of the fresh intake gas around the engine, from the intake system to the exhaust system, when the fresh intake gas pressure is greater than the exhaust gas pressure.

A method for regenerating a DPF in an exhaust aftertreatment system includes the steps of: monitoring a temperature of exhaust associated with a DOC; retarding an injection of fuel into at least one combustion cylinder, and thereby intentionally causing a misfire in the at least one combustion cylinder, dependent on the monitoring step; increasing an outlet temperature of the exhaust from the DOC to a first threshold temperature; and oxidizing particulates within the DPF when the exhaust is at the increased temperature. The number and/or frequency of the misfires is controlled to provide the desired exhaust temperature at the DPF inlet.

Method for regeneration of diesel particulate filter in an exhaust aftertreatment system of an IC engine

An internal combustion engine defined as having an engine block for internal combustion, a high-pressure turbocharger for delivering pressurized intake air to the engine block, a low-pressure turbocharger for delivering pressurized intake air to the high-pressure turbocharger, a turbogenerator for recovering heat energy from the exhaust gas downstream of the low-pressure turbocharger to generate electricity, and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system comprising an EGR-pump drawing exhaust gas from an EGR inlet located between the low-pressure and high-pressure turbocharger turbines, wherein the EGR-pump controllably delivers exhaust gas to an EGR mixer in the pressurized intake air stream at a location between the low-pressure and high-pressure turbocharger compressors. An electronic control unit (ECU) is adapted to command the EGR-pump to deliver a desired EGR flow-rate to the engine block based on look-up tables and either open-loop and/or closed-loop control algorithms.

Interstage exhaust gas recirculation system for a dual turbocharged engine having a turbogenerator system

A stoichiometric compression ignition engine has a turbocharger coupled to it so that the exhaust from the engine feeds the turbine and the compressor provides combustion air past a throttle and intercooler to the engine intake manifold. An exhaust after treatment device is positioned before the exhaust of the engine. A power turbine is connected in parallel relation to the turbocharger turbine and is controlled by a valve to operate the power turbine whenever either the turbocharger compressor boost or the turbocharger turbine back pressure exceed given limits. The power turbine is connected by a power transmission device to either couple to the engine output or to an electrical generator. An EGR loop may be driven by a pump also connected to the power turbine to lower in cylinder pressures.

Stoichiometric compression ignition engine with increased power output

A method of controlling a diesel engine connected to a load, the method including the steps of detecting an increased torque requirement and matching a fuel flow with an airflow. The detecting an increased torque requirement step detects an increased torque requirement for the engine, the increased torque requirement taking place during a period of time. The matching a fuel flow step matches a fuel flow with an airflow going to the engine during the increased torque requirement, the matching step keeps the airflow and the fuel flow during the period of time at a substantially stoichiometric level enabling the use of a three-way catalyst to reduce NOx emissions during transients.

A high flow EGR system for an internal combustion engine having a pair of series connected EGR coolers and a water droplet condensation collector and reservoir connected to the gas flow. The reservoir feeds a pump which is actuated to inject the liquid to the engine adjacent each cylinder for uniform distribution of the water to the engine cylinders. The pump is controlled to inject the water at appropriate conditions during the engine operating cycle.

High flow EGR system

An internal combustion engine includes a block defining a plurality of combustion cylinders, an intake manifold fluidly coupled with at least one combustion cylinder, and an exhaust manifold fluidly coupled with at least one combustion cylinder. An EGR valve may be fluidly coupled between the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold. A turbocharger includes a turbine fluidly coupled with the exhaust manifold, and a compressor fluidly coupled with the intake manifold. A microphone is positioned at the compressor inlet or the compressor outlet provides an output signal. An ECU is coupled with the microphone, and controls operation of an actuatable element of a VGT, an EGR valve, and/or an injected fuel quantity, to prevent surge of the compressor, dependent upon the output signal from the microphone.

A compact system for introducing hydrocarbons in the form of engine fuel into the bearing housing for a turbocharger adjacent the turbine wheel shaft. The hydrocarbons are directed outward by centrifugal force and are vaporized by the heat of the impeller. As a result the hydrocarbons are available substantially immediately after the turbine to interact with a catalyst to increase the temperature of the exhaust stream for regeneration of a diesel particulate filter.

Compact system for adding hydrocarbons to the exhaust of an internal combustion engine

An assembly for cleaning blowby gases has an electric heater and a downstream catalyst positioned in series relationship in a blowby conduit leading from an engine's crankcase to the atmosphere. The heater is controlled by a controller to maintain a selected temperature at the inlet to the catalyst as determined by a temperature sensor. The heating of the blowby gases increases the blowby gas temperature to a level where the catalyst is active to oxidize the constituents of the blowby gas stream.

A particulate filter regeneration system for an internal combustion engine includes a plurality of combustion cylinders, an intake manifold and an exhaust manifold. The particulate filter regeneration system includes a particulate filter adapted for communication with the exhaust manifold, a flame heater adapted for communication with the intake manifold, and a temperature indicator for providing an indication of a temperature associated with the exhaust manifold. A controller is coupled with the temperature indicator and the flame heater. The controller actuates the flame heater dependent upon a particulate filter regeneration indicator and a signal from the temperature indicator indicating a temperature of less than approximately 300&#xb0; C.

Particulate filter regeneration system for an internal combustion engine

A power system including a stoichiometric compression ignition engine in which a roots blower is positioned in the air intake for the engine to control air flow. Air flow is decreased during part power conditions to maintain the air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber of the engine at stoichiometric, thus enabling the use of inexpensive three-way catalyst to reduce oxides of nitrogen. The roots blower is connected to a motor generator so that when air flow is reduced, electrical energy is stored which is made available either to the roots blower to temporarily increase air flow or to the system electrical load and thus recapture energy that would otherwise be lost in reducing air flow.
