A method, device and system for providing communication session mobility of multimedia content delivered to a mobile communication device, such as a Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) mobile video device. For example, multimedia content delivered to a mobile communication device via a DVB-H network can be transferred seamlessly to a cellular data network. Session mobility is provided using a control server or session controller configured to manage and facilitate the transfer of the content delivery. The control server manages the transfer in response to receiving appropriate communication session control information from the mobile communication device. The control server can be a network element coupled to or contained within the network that couples a multimedia content source to one or more wireless control points that communicate with the end user mobile communication device. Alternatively, the control server can be partially or completely included or contained within the multimedia content provider.

Method, device and system for session mobility of multimedia content delivered to mobile communication devices

The invention provides for path optimization for routing of a communication session in a network having a plurality of core networks coupled to a plurality of access networks. Both a core network and an access network perform the path optimization by determining a plurality of possible paths to a plurality of target access points to form a target matrix, determining a corresponding route preference factor for each possible path of the target matrix, and selecting, from the target matrix, a possible path having an optimal route preference factor. An overall or complete path, for routing of the communication session, is then determined either by combining the selected possible paths, or by selecting one possible path as a complete path. The route preference factor, for each possible path, is determined based upon various routing variables, such as quality of service, bandwidth for the communication session, route complexity, interconnect cost, routing cost; resource loading, resource availability, and operator preference for traffic biasing.

Segmented and distributed path optimization in a communication network

A hammer-ripper system for use with the mounting on the boom arm, of an excavator/backhoe, of a conventional hydraulically-operated hammer fitted with a &ldquo;shortened&rdquo; chisel. A &ldquo;ripping-type&rdquo; device like a chisel tooth mounts to a lever with its pivot point attached to the side of the hammer. One end of the lever extends to be impacted by under the shortened chisel, while the other end extends inward. Thus, the tooth end can be placed under embedded boulders and used to hammer (using the transmitted reciprocating action of the hydraulic hammer), and pry or break up the boulders from underneath with the combined hammering and ripping action.

An apparatus for operating a clutch in a split-axle mechanism of a vehicle for instantaneously engaging four-wheel drive. In a preferred embodiment the apparatus includes a cable operatively connected to a control switch within the passenger compartment of the vehicle and an actuator, adjacent to the split axle mechanism. Activation of the switch causes instantaneous movement of the cable which, in turn, instantaneously causes the actuator to engage or disengage the clutch. When the clutch is engaged, the split axles rotate together. When the clutch is disengaged, the split axles rotate independently. In another embodiment a locking device is used to lock the actuator in position. The actuator can be locked to engage or disengage the clutch for enabling or disabling four-wheel drive.

An improved network interface architecture for a packet switch provides for the combination of both voice and data in a single switch using a common packet structure. It allows for the dynamic allocation of bandwidth based on system loading. This includes not only bandwidth within the voice or data areas of the frame, but also between the voice and data portions. The network interface (NI) provides a mechanism (the NI-Bus) of passing all packets through the Network Interface or allowing the packet devices to directly transfer packets between one another. The bandwidth allocation can easily be changed because the control and data memories are synchronized to one another. The network interface architecture, according to the invention, allows for the data packets and the control of bandwidth allocation to be controlled by a single switching device. It synchronizes the transfer of the data and the allocation of bus bandwidth. The control of the packet devices can be controlled at a very high bit rate such as, for example, 40 Mbps. It also allows packet devices to directly transfer packets. It allows for easy re-allocation of bandwidth through the use of the NI Base Registers.

User device (12) classes are established in a communications network (100). An access point (10) utilizes a first password to create an encryption key, then generates a plurality of secondary passwords for use by devices (12). User device (12) classes are established by assigning a secondary password to a respective class of users, determining the network access permitted the class, determining the network services provided to the class and finally assigning the secondary password to a device (12') seeking to communicate within the network (100).

Method for establishing classes within a communication network

A common communication controller is linked to a plurality of peripheral devices by a network interface bus. Packets containing information is communicated between the controller and the peripherals over the bus which consists of a parallel packet bus and a plurality of control lines utilized to implement a communication protocol which increases the efficiencies of packet communications by the utilization of additional direct command lines between the communications controller and peripherals.

A hierarchical addressing technique is employed in a packet communications system to enhance flexibility in storing and referencing packet information. This method permits packet message data and certain packet control data to be stored in memory locations without having to be duplicated at a different memory location prior to transmission of the packet. This method is preferably employed in a ring configuration in which a series of packets have addressing mechanisms which points sequentially to each other to form a ring of packets received or to be transmitted.

Addressing technique for storing and referencing packet data

An improved network interface architecture for a packet switch provides a mechanism for handling voice and data packets. Bandwidth allocation can be changed because control and data memories are synchronized to one another. A hierarchical addressing technique is employed to enhance flexibility in handling packet information. This method permits packet message data and certain packet control data to be stored in memory locations without having to be duplicated at a different memory location prior to transmission of the packet. In an exemplary wireless TDMA packet network a control module (CM) sends a time stamp relative to the beginning of its frame in a synchronization packet allowing each of a plurality of user modules (UM) to maintain synchronization relative to the CM. The CM uses a plurality of directional antennas and transmits the synchronization packets over each antenna over a predetermined number of frames. The UMs use a receive time stamp to identify the beginning of a received synchronization packet. The difference between the time stamps combined with a delay constant is used by the UMs to adjust time synchronization to the CM frame. Packets are communicated between the controller and the peripherals at the UM and CM over a bus using a communication protocol which increases the efficiencies of packet communications by allowing additional direct command lines between the communications controller and peripherals.

Wireless in-building telecommunications system for voice and data

A packet switching system (100) having a packet switch (140) employs an acknowledgement scheme in order assure the delivery of all fragments (310) comprising a fragmented data packet (300) to improve overall system throughput during the handling of packets (310) that require reassembly. When packet fragments (310) are lost, corrupted or otherwise unintelligible to a receiving device (92, 94), the acknowledgement scheme permits retransmission of the missing data. In addition, a second acknowledgment signal is scheduled by system processing resources (110) in order to verify the successful delivery of all retransmitted data.

Packet delivery system

A packet switching system (100) employs packet reassembly hardware (214) in a packet switch (140) to improve overall system throughput during the handling of transmission packets (310) that require reassembly. In this manner, reassembly is accomplished with minimal processor (110) intervention and without having to duplicate the message data portion (312) of a transmission packet (310) into a different memory location prior to retransmission.

Multiple interrupt request data is stored in a queue and handled by a single interrupt sub-routine to provide a batch handling capability to maximize the interrupt handling efficiency of a microprocessor. Events are organized into groups having a common interrupt handling requirement and a data storage queue is provided for each group. At least one data word is stored for each event requiring interrupt attention in a respective queue. An interrupt handling routine upon a single call handles all data words within a queue before exiting the interrupt handling routine.

User module (12) access capabilities are provided within a wireless Local Area Network (LAN) having distinct user groups (1-3). In this effort, a password is entered into a UM (12) seeking access within a user group (1-3). In response to the password, the UM (12) selects a key and a polynomial from memory (20). Thereafter, packets received by and transmitted from the UM (12) are encrypted, by encryption circuit (52), with the selected key and polynomial. Communictions is permitted if the UM selected key and polynomial are identical to those used by the user group CMs (10). Alternatively, the key is generated as a function of the password, while a polynomial is selected from memory (20).

Method and apparatus for restricting access within a wireless local area

An antenna selection technique is used in an RF communincation system in which user modules (UM) communicate with at least one node. The UM's and nodes each have multiple antennae. The combination of each UM and node antenna is evaluated at the UM. Based on at least signal quality, the UM selects its antenna and the best node antenna for use. An alternate antenna is selected if a person is determined to be present in a predetermined area adjacent a UM corresponding to a predetermined RF power level.
