A presently-preferred capacitor discharge system for a circuit breaker adapted for use in a switchgear enclosure comprises a capacitor discharge circuit adapted to be electrically coupled to the capacitor, and a contact switch electrically coupled to the capacitor discharge circuit and adapted to be mechanically coupled to a support truck of the circuit breaker. The contact switch is movable between a first and a second position. The system also comprises a resistor electrically coupled to the capacitor discharge circuit, and a lever arm adapted to be rigidly coupled to a racking mechanism of the circuit breaker and adapted to urge the contact switch into the closed position when a locking arm of the racking mechanism disengages from the switchgear enclosure. The capacitor discharge system is adapted to electrically couple the capacitor and the resistor when the contact switch is in the second position thereby discharging the capacitor.

A relay test set of reduced size and weight includes a small, highly efficient voltage and current source. The test set incorporates a Class D switching amplifier design that greatly reduces the size of the power source needed to inject the correct voltage and current into the secondary inputs of a protective relay. To further reduce the size, weight and cost of the relay test set, a single voltage amplifier is used to drive both voltage and current secondary inputs of a protective relay. In so doing, this test set then becomes both a voltage transformer and current transformer simulator utilizing a single voltage power source at reduced size, weight and cost. To make the power source variable while maintaining accuracy, a microcomputer module is used to monitor both current and voltage being injected into the protective relay. This microcomputer may also automatically run the required relay tests and route the voltage or current to the appropriate inputs of the protective relay by direct control of a relay matrix.

A method and system for preventing sustained resonance conditions in a power system involves measuring voltage and current samples on a conductor to which a plurality of controlled capacitors are operatively coupled. The measured voltage and/or current is utilized to identify a resonance condition. The method or system determines whether the resonance condition is due to switching of a controlled capacitor and, if so a corrective switching operation is performed after a first time delay. If the resonance condition is determined not to be due to the switching of a capacitor, then a second switching operation, in which a second controlled capacitor is switched after a second time delay, is performed. The second time delay is preferably greater than the first time delay.

Harmonic resonance control and protection system for switched power factor control capacitor devices

A solid state control system for controlling activation signals to circuit breaker electro-mechanical close coils is disclosed. The system employs a novel arrangement of a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) and other electronic components, such as a FET, to provide 'anti-pump.' The system locks out continuous close signals until after the close signal has been removed and then reapplied.
