A water-based coloring composition suitable for use in children's markers comprising a carrier, submicron polymeric particles, and a neutral buoyancy additive. The coloring compositions produce unique opaque images on a wide variety of writing surfaces. Additionally, the invention includes a water-based dry erase coloring composition suitable for use in children's markers comprising a carrier, submicron polymeric particles, a neutral buoyancy additive, and a release agent.

Water-based coloring compositions containing submicron polymeric particles

A washable dry erase coloring composition comprising an acid dye or polymeric dye colorant, a dye vehicle, a release agent, and an anionic dyeblocker. The dyeblocker additive may be an aromatic organic sulfonate and, preferably, is either a sulfonated naphthalene condensation product or a sulfonated phenol-formaldehyde condensation product. The dry erase coloring composition is suitable for use in marking on a whiteboard and enhances fugitivity from skin and fabrics. The dry erase coloring composition may optionally contain a film forming resin. More specifically, the invention is, in one preferred embodiment, a washable erasable whiteboard marker ink comprising an acid dye or polymeric dye, water, a film forming resin, a release agent and an aromatic organic sulfonate. In addition, the invention also includes a method of transferring an image from a whiteboard or non-porous surface to paper. This method comprises the steps of: (a) drawing an image on a whiteboard or non-porous surface with a washable coloring composition containing a dyeblocker; (b) applying a moistened paper to the image; (c) rubbing the moistened paper to transfer the image from the whiteboard to the paper; and (d) removing the paper.

Image transfer method for use with water based dry erase markers

A modeling dough comprising gelled poly(vinyl alcohol), water and a filler provides a dough resistant to flaking, cracking, and crumbling. In the disclosed invention, the poly(vinyl alcohol) resin is gelled, thereby providing a water-based resin system that is not sticky yet very ductile. Prior to drying, the dough also exhibits the properties of bounceability and the ability to pick up newsprint. After the dough is air-dried, the poly resin serves to bind the components into a solid, durable product. The filler accounts for a large portion of the volume of the dough, so the overall volume is not greatly affected by water loss upon drying. The dough is water-based and easy to wash from skin, carpets, and other surfaces. Dyes and pigments can be easily incorporated into the formula. The dried product is sandable and paintable.

Modeling dough

A coloring system is provided in which an undercolor composition is applied to a substrate to thereby leave a colorless mark. The undercolor composition is then written over with an overcolor composition, thereby causing the undercolor mark to become colored. The overcolor composition may itself contain a colorant. In one embodiment, the color-changing effects are accomplished by employing a dye that is colorless in the presence of high pH and/or a reducing agent, but that becomes colored as the pH is lowered, as the undercolor colorant. In a second embodiment, the color-changing effects are accomplished by employing a dye that is colorless at low pH, but that becomes colored as the pH is raised, as the undercolor colorant.

Latent image compositions

Pan paints and associated color-changing systems are disclosed. In a first embodiment, the color-changing system comprises an undercolor pan paint coloring composition comprising an undercolor dye whose coloring ability is destroyed in the presence of a pH of about 10 or greater and/or in the presence of a reducing agent; and an overcolor composition comprising a colorant capable of maintaining its characteristic color in the presence of a pH of about 10 or greater and/or in the presence of a reducing agent, and a base such that the pH of the overcolor composition is about 10 or greater and/or a reducing agent. In a second embodiment, the color-changing system comprises an undercolor coloring composition comprising an undercolor dye whose coloring ability is destroyed in the presence of a pH of about 4 or less; and an overcolor coloring composition comprising a colorant capable of maintaining its characteristic color in the presence of a pH of about 4 or less and an acid such that the pH of the overcolor coloring composition is about 4 or less; wherein one or both of the coloring compositions is a pan paint.
