A turbocharged internal combustion engine is provided in which the exterior of one side of the engine block has a cavity formed therein. A head is secured to the block and overlies the cylinders formed therein. The head is provided with an internal intake passageway and an internal exhaust passageway for each cylinder formed in the block. One end of each intake passageway communicates with the cavity and one end of each exhaust passageway terminates at the exterior of the head in proximity to the cavity formed in the block. A heat exchange assembly is disposed adjacent the cavity and is provided with a housing which is mounted on the block one side and in overlying relation with the cavity. The housing is provided with an inlet and an outlet spaced therefrom. A heat transfer means is disposed within the housing and is located between the inlet and outlet thereof. The housing outlet communicates with the cavity. The housing inlet, on the other hand, communicates with the charged air outlet of a turbocharger which is located adjacent the one side of the block. The turbocharger is provided with an exhaust gas intake which communicates with the exhaust passageways formed in the head. The charged air entering the housing must pass the heat transfer means within the housing before exiting to the cavity.

Turbocharged internal combustion engine

An aluminum rocker housing (10) is secured to the cylinder head (8) of an internal combustion engine (2) to surround and protect the cylinder valve assemblies (156, 158) and associated rocker arm mechanism. The front face (58) of the rocker housing (10) includes a recessed surface (68) which forms an air intake plenum (60) for receiving pressured air from the engine turbocharger (48). Air intake passageways (84, 86, 88) cast to the rear of the front face (58) communicate with the air intake plenum (60) and simultaneously register with air intake ports (160) formed in the cylinder head (8) to provide a means for distributing air from the air intake plenum (60) to the cylinders (16). A rocker cover (12) molded from plastic is secured to the rocker housing (10) by a plurality of vibration-damping bolt assemblies (13). The rocker cover (12) contains a drip lip (148) to prevent engine lubricants from coming into contact with the rocker cover gasket (14). The rocker cover (12) also includes a means (151) for engaging the gasket (14) to increase the sealing capacity thereof.

Rocker housing and rocker cover

This disclosure relates to a turbocharged reciprocating piston type of internal combustion engine. The engine includes a block, a head fastened to the upper side of the block, and a rocker housing fastened to the upper side of the head. The head has intake air and exhaust passages formed in it between intake and exhaust openings and intake and exhaust ports of the engine cylinders. The turbocharger is mounted on one side of the engine block, and the exhaust openings are in the head on the same side as the turbocharger. Exhaust manifold ducts connect the exhaust openings with the turbocharger. The intake openings are formed in the upper surface of the head and air intake passages are formed in the rocker housing. An air intake duct and manifold connect the turborcharger with the passages of the housing. The intake air passages of the head are formed and located to provide an advantageous heat transfer relation between the intake air and the surrounding engine ports.

Internal combustion engine

A compact lubrication fluid filtering and cooling assembly including a bracket (16) for simultaneously mounting a pair of lubrication filters, (12 and 14) and a lubrication fluid cooler (10) on the block (4) of an internal combustion engine equipped with an internally contained lubrication circuit and providing fluid connection therewith. The bracket (16) provides a plurality of fluid flow passages (30, 77, 80, 88 and 91a) whereby lubrication fluid is conducted from the main engine oil discharge port (24) into bracket (16) into a first discharge port (26) leading to filter (12) from which oil is returned to the bracket for delivery to cooler (10), and from cooler (10) back through bracket (16) to the main return port on the engine block. At the same time, a predetermined amount of lubrication fluid is diverted through a bleed passage (30) to an auxiliary filter (14) and then conveyed through a flow passage (80) in bracket (16) to an auxiliary port (81) which communicates with an auxiliary inlet port (82b) formed on the engine block. Cooler (10) includes a hollow shell (45) in which a plurality of spaced coolant tubes are supported by a pair of support plates (50, 51) positioned at opposite ends of the shell and secured to hollow shell (45) to form a fluid tight seal. End caps (60, 62) are joined to hollow shell (45) in a manner to prevent the nondestructive disassembly of cooler (10) and require its replacement during engine maintenance or overhaul. Cooler (10) is mounted on bracket (16) in an offset position with respect to its central longitudinal axis to form a compact cooler/filter assembly in a manner which does not unduly complicate the internal flow passages (30, 77, 80, 88 and 91a) contained within the bracket (16).

Lubrication fluid filtering and cooling assembly

This disclosure relates to a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine including a block and a head secured to the upper side of the block. A coolant circulation pump and manifolds are provided on one side of the block, and coolant inflow and outflow passages are formed through the side of the block and leading to the manifolds. A flow path is provided for each engine cylinder, the coolant for each cylinder flowing from a feed manifold and an inflow passage, around a cylinder, into the head, around the cylinder valves and injector, into the block, and out of the outflow passges to a collection manifold.

Internal combustion engine coolant system

A viscous fluid clutch is provided which embodies first, second and third drive members rotatable about a common axis. The second drive member is provided with an internal chamber in which both the first and third drive members are disposed. A predetermined amount of viscous fluid is disposed within the chamber. The third drive member is positioned between the first drive member and a chamber-forming wall of the second drive member. The second and third drive members rotate as a unit and the third drive member is movable axially independently of said second drive member. Corresponding surfaces of the first and third drive members form therebetween an annular fluid shear space concentric with the rotary axis of the drive members. The chamber-forming wall of the second drive member is provided with a thermal-responsive membrane having a segment thereof independently movable axially of the first drive member in response to predetermined ambient temperature changes. Axial movement of the membrane effects axial movement of the third drive member and varies the configuration of the annular fluid shear space. All of the drive members are adapted to rotate as a unit when the first and third drive members are in closest axial proximity and the annular fluid shear space is substantially filled with the viscous fluid.

Viscous fluid clutch

A cylinder liner is disclosed for an internal combustion engine including a cylindrical hollow body having a press fitted upper end and a stop located intermediate the liner ends for engaging an engine block liner stop to provide upper and lower seals for a coolant passage. The outside surfaces of the liner adjacent the press fitted upper end and the stop are formed to permit a settable plastic material to be used between the liner and engine block to assist in forming the coolant seal and to provide radial support to the liner to permit the lower 30 percent of the cylinder liner to be free of any direct contact with the engine block. This design also permits use of a smaller capacity cooling system and improves lubricating oil flow within the engine block.

A hydraulic tappet or lash adjuster of simplified design is disclosed for use in the valve train of an internal combustion engine equipped with dual ramp cams. In one embodiment, the disclosed tappet is designed to respond to the presence or absence of control pressure supplied through a single supply port to cause variation in the timed relationship of valve opening and piston movement whereby the internal combustion engine may be operated in a power mode or a braking mode. In another embodiment, a pressure relief outlet is provided in the tappet for cooperation with a pressure relief port to insure collapse of the tappet thereby to prevent the valve from being opened beyond a pre-determined fully open position.

Controllable valve tappet for use with dual ramp cam

A fluid drive coupling is provided which includes a platelike first member rotatably mounted within a chamber formed in a second member, the latter also being rotatably mounted. Both members are rotatable about a common axis and one of the members is driven by an external force. The chamber is formed into an annular fluid drive section having surfaces thereof in close proximity to substantial outer opposite surface portions of the first member whereby rotation of one member imparts rotation to the other member through a fluid disposed within the chamber drive section. The chamber is also formed into an inner section, a portion of which, disposed to one side of the first member, is separated into first and second fluid reservoirs interconnected to one another only through a port. A thermal responsive valve is mounted on the second member and is rotatable therewith. The valve effects opening and closing of the port in response to predetermined temperatures. An elongated cavity is formed in the second member adjacent to and in communication with a peripheral segment of the chamber drive section. An elongated skimming means is disposed in slip fit relation within the cavity and has a portion thereof projecting into the chamber drive section and encompassing a peripheral portion of the first member. When the first member is rotating in one direction relative to the second member, the skimming means will cause removal of fluid from the surfaces of the rotating first member encompassed thereby and divert the removed fluid into the cavity whereupon the fluid will flow from the cavity into the first reservoir.

Fluid drive coupling

The disclosure illustrates an anti rotation seal assembly for use with a shaft mounted impeller or other rotatable element having a wear face. A nose portion of a carbon sealing washer is urged against the wear face by a spring contained within a non rotatable seal housing. The sealing washer has surfaces on its outer periphery which engage anti rotation elements supported by the seal housing to prevent rotation of the washer while permitting axial movement. In another form the anti rotation elements may be molded into the washer.
