This relates to blow molded containers, and particularly to the formation of blow molded containers formed of a plastic material which is subjectable to a high degree of biaxial orientation for maximum strength. Two containers are formed in each blow molding operation with each container having throughout the stress areas thereof a high degree of biaxial orientation. A container may be in the form of a bottle having an as formed open bottom which is closed by a metal end unit seamed in place. Other containers will have open mouths closed by conventional closures including metal end units which are seamed to the container body or by closure caps which may be releasably interlocked with the neck finish of the container in several known modes. In every instance the containers are formed with a minimum of scrap. Plastic container and method of forming same

This relates to a method of forming a thermal/collapse-resistant highly oriented polyester container for use in hot fill applications. In accordance with the method of a polyester preform is reheated and then placed in a blow mold cavity whereat the preform is distended to match the blow mold cavity to form an intermediate article including a container having an oriented end unit receiving finish of a diameter materially greater than the diameter of the preform. The method is characterized in that in providing the preform the composition of the polyester, the draw ratio during distending of the preform and reheat conditions are all controlled to provide a container with a sidewall and finish density in the range of 1.350 to substantially but less than 1.370 grams/cubic centimeter.

Method for producing a hot fillable, collapse resistant polyester

This relates to the blow molding of containers wherein the containers are formed of biaxially oriented plastic material. A multi-sided hollow member is blown within a convention blow mold using a conventional type of preform. Each side, when severed from the top and bottom of the hollow member and from each other forms a tray or box like container having a bottom, side walls and a peripheral sealing flange. The efficiency of the container from a weight to capacity standpoint is at a maximum due to the biaxial orientation of the plastic material.

Method of forming a plastic container

This relates to the forming of a blow molded polyester container wherein a bottle having a conventional upper neck portion and an intermediate body is provided with a lower portion which includes an annular seaming flange which is integrally connected to the lower end of the body and wherein, with the exception of the seaming flange, the lower portion is removed and the bottle is closed by a separately formed bottom double seamed to the lower end of the body utilizing the annular seaming flange. During the interim between the removal of the bottle lower portion and the application of a separate bottom, the bottle is fully open so as to be readily commercially interiorly coated with a barrier coating. The separately formed bottom may be readily formed of metal and may be so constructed as to provide a large diameter base for supporting the bottle in upstanding position. Method of forming a composite container

This relates to the cutting or trimming of a blow molded polyester resin article utilizing a CO.sub.2 laser. The article is axially positioned and rotated while the laser beam is focused and concentrated on a preselected portion of the article. The laser beam beneficially vaporizes the polyester resin in the cutting thereof as opposed to forming a dust. Further, the action of the laser is one wherein a certain melting occurs so that the resultant cut edge of the retained part of the article is rounded and sealed.

Trimming of polyester containers using a laser

A plastic jar is formed by blow molding a combination adapter and jar and thereafter the jar is cut from the adapter utilizing a laser beam. The jar may be blow molded from a preform which is of an injection molded laminated construction so that the wall of the jar is formed of plural layers. The head generated by the laser beam will melt and bond together these layers as opposed to permitting delamination as would occur should the jar be cut from the adapter by a knife or the like. The cut surface of the jar forms the mouth defining surface of the jar and it is preferred that the cut be inclined at a slight angle to a plane normal to the axis of the jar. Damage to the diametrically opposite surface of the jar by portions of the laser beam being utilized for cut off passing through the jar is prevented by a pressurized gas supply tube which is in the path of the laser beam and serves as an absorber for stray rays. Intermediate article of manufacture for a plastic container

This relates to the provision of a snap-in closure for plastic beverage bottles. The neck of a conventional bottle is foreshortened through the elimination of the customary closure threads and the extreme end of the neck is reformed by way of an ultrasonic tool to define a radially inwardly turned sealing flange having a pour opening of a preselected controlled diameter therethrough. A snap-in closure is provided with the closure including a plug with a radially outwardly directed flange, the plug and flange being snapable through the pour opening in the sealing flange and the closure flange and thereafter engaging the sealing flange to seal the bottle. Method of forming bottle neck finish for accepting a snap-in closure

This disclosure relates to improvements in the cross section of a bottom end of a plastic bottle suitable for packaging liquids under internal pressures. The bottom end is primarily one which includes a generally hemispherical bottom wall having projecting therefrom in circumferentially spaced relation hollow legs terminating in supporting feet. The bottom end is stiffened against creep of the plastic material over a period of time under the influence of the internal pressure by changing the configuration of the bottom wall from that of a hemisphere to one which includes a configuration of straight line sections and curved line sections when viewed in radial cross section along the axis of the bottle.
