A process for forming an image on a transparent or translucent substrate comprising the steps of providing an imageable element comprising a transparent or translucent glass or polymeric film having a coating of a black metal on one surface thereof, directing radiation in an imagewise distributed pattern at said black metal layer with sufficient intensity to substantially increase the light transmissivity of the medium in the irradiated region in an imagewise distributed pattern, said element having no layers comprising a thermally activated gas-generating composition. The image comprises residual black metal on the film base, and may be used for overhead transparencies, contact negatives/positives, and the like.

An apparatus and method for providing contact between a donor sheet and a receptor sheet in a laser-induced thermal transfer printer make use of a support means for supporting a receptor sheet, means for mounting a donor sheet proximal to the receptor sheet over the support means, and means for applying tension to the donor sheet to draw the donor sheet into contact with the receptor sheet. The means for mounting the donor sheet and applying tension may be a clamp mechanism mounted on the support means. The clamp mechanism has a first clamp for holding a first end of the donor sheet and a second clamp for holding a second end of the donor sheet. The second clamp is movable relative to the first clamp to apply tension to the donor sheet, thereby drawing the donor sheet into contact with the receptor sheet.

Color filter elements are prepared by the laser induced thermal transfer of colorant from a color donor to a transparent, non-birefringent substrate such as glass or polymeric film. Transparent pigments which are less prone to migration, more thermally stable, and considerably more lightfast than dyes can be used to prepare the color filter elements of this invention. Color filter elements are useful for elements in color displays such as liquid crystal display devices.

Methods for preparing color filter elements using laser induced transfer

This invention relates to a laser imageable donor material that is capable of transferring pigment to a receiver, such as plain paper, polymeric film, metal and the like. The donor material is composed of at least a transparent film, an overlying layer of vapor coated black aluminum, and a dye coating or pigment coating dispersed on top of the black aluminum. A material which generates gas when irradiated may also be present as a separate layer under or in the dye or pigment layer and above the black aluminum layer. The construction can be addressed with diode lasers and diode-pumped solid state lasers. The invention can be used to produce large format digital halftone color proofs using high power air-cooled diode-pumped Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF lasers. Other materials could be transferred from the donor sheet in this process as well as the colorant (dye or pigment) layer.

Laser propulsion transfer using black metal coated substrates

Laser-addressable thermal transfer materials for producing color proofs, printing plates, films, printed circuit boards, and other media are disclosed. The materials contain a substrate coated thereon with a propellant layer wherein the propellant layer contains a material capable of producing nitrogen (N.sub.2) gas at a temperature of preferably less than about 300.degree. C.; a radiation absorber; and a thermal mass transfer material. The thermal mass transfer material may be incorporated into the propellant layer or in an additional layer coated onto the propellant layer. The radiation absorber may be employed in one of the above-disclosed layers or in a separate layer in order to achieve localized heating with an electromagnetic energy source, such as a laser. Upon laser induced heating, the transfer material is propelled to the receptor by the rapid expansion of gas. The thermal mass transfer material may contain, for example, pigments, toner particles, resins, metal particles, monomers, polymers, dyes, or combinations thereof. Also disclosed is a process for forming an image as well as an imaged article made thereby.
