An interference cancellation system may include a radio frequency (RF) transmitter configured to generate an RF interference signal, and an RF receiver configured to receive an RF input signal that includes a signal of interest component and an RF interference signal component from the RF transmitter. The system may also include an electro-optical (EO) modulator configured to apply an interference cancellation phase shift to the RF interference signal, an optical-to-electrical (OE) converter, and an optical path between the EO modulator and OE converter. The system may also include an RF dispersive delay filter connected to the OE converter, and an RF coupler connected to the RF dispersive delay filter and the RF receiver to subtract the RF interference signal component from the RF input signal thereby producing the signal of interest component.

A communications device may include a remote device having a first E/O modulator to modulate an optical carrier signal with an input signal having a first frequency, an optical waveguide coupled to the remote device, and a local device coupled to the optical waveguide. A tunable Radio Frequency (RF) filter device includes a tunable optical source generating an optical carrier signal, and a modulator coupled to the tunable optical source and modulating the optical carrier signal with an RF input signal. The tunable RF filter device may include first and second optical waveguide paths coupled to the modulator and having first and second dispersion slopes of opposite sign from each other, one or more of the first and second optical waveguide paths comprising an optical splitter and combiner pair therein, and an optical-to-electrical converter coupled to the first and second optical waveguide paths and generating an RF output signal with a frequency notch therein based upon the tunable optical source.

The tunable RF filter device may also include first and second optical waveguides coupled to the modulator and having first and second dispersion slopes of opposite sign, and an optical-to-electrical converter coupled to the first and second optical waveguides and configured to generate an RF output signal with a frequency notch therein based upon the tunable optical source.

A communications device includes a transmitter device having first and second optical sources and generating respective first and second modulated optical carrier signals at first and second optical carrier frequencies based upon an input signal. The communications device also includes an optical waveguide coupled to the transmitter device, and a receiver device coupled to the optical waveguide and including an FM-PM discriminator having a transfer function with a positive slope portion and a negative slope portion so that the first optical carrier frequency is positioned on the positive slope portion and the second optical carrier frequency is positioned on the negative slope portion.

A communications device includes a transmitter device including an optical source configured to generate an optical carrier signal, and a modulator coupled to the optical source and configured to modulate the optical carrier signal with an input signal having a first frequency, an optical waveguide coupled to the transmitter device, and a receiver device coupled to the optical waveguide. The receiver device includes an optical splitter, a first waveguide path coupled to the optical splitter and configured to filter a sideband from the modulated optical carrier signal, a second waveguide path coupled to the optical splitter and configured to generate a selected sideband from selectable sidebands based upon the modulated optical carrier signal, and an optical-to-electrical converter coupled to the first and second waveguide paths and configured to generate an output signal including a replica of the input signal at a second frequency based upon the selected sideband.

RF communications device including an optical link and related devices and methods

A signal receiver, such as an RF-matched filter receiver, includes an optical source (e.g. a mode-locked laser) providing an optical signal, and a first optical modulator to modulate the optical signal with a received RF signal and provide a modulated optical signal. A second optical modulator modulates the modulated optical signal with a reference signal and provides a twice modulated optical signal. The modulators may be Mach-Zehnder Modulators (MZM) and/or Indium Phosphide (InP) modulators. An optical detector receives the twice modulated optical signal and provides a detected signal, and a processing unit receives the detected signal and extracts or measures cross-correlation between the received RF signal and the reference signal.

Radio frequency (RF) signal receiver using optical processing and associated methods

A method is provided for co-site interference mitigation in an RF communication system. Spectral nulls created in an optical domain may be used to mitigate interfering signals in an RF signal. The method includes: receiving an RF input signal via an antenna; generating two optical signals that are each modulated using the RF signal; creating a phase delay in one of the two optical signals that corresponds with a spectral null at a frequency of an interfering signal; converting the two optical signals into two corresponding electrical signals and combining the two electrical signals to create spectral nulls via interference between the two signals and form a mitigated output signal. In this way, the spectral null offsets the amplitude of the interfering signal, thereby reducing the signal strength of the interfering signal.

Wideband RF photonic link for dynamic co-site interference mitigation

The invention relates to a method for the estimation of chromatic dispersion in multichannel optical network spans during active operation. The invention further discloses a chromatic dispersion monitor for real time monitoring of accumulated dispersion in individual channels. The method effectively estimates accumulated chromatic dispersion by obtaining a contour map of the eye diagram correlating more than three points for measuring at least two parameters to known dispersion. This can provide accurate BER indication before failure occurs and provide indication of the sign of dispersion for faster correction. A chromatic dispersion monitor includes a high speed linear receiver to receive individual channel signals from a tunable filter, a clock recovery circuit with a variable time delay device for obtaining points to establish the contoured eye map and a processor for calculating metric values from the contoured eye map and correlating the calculated metric vales to a stored library of accumulated chromatic dispersion.
