A multi-element diffraction grating is disclosed. The multi-element diffraction grating may be configured to diffract incident radiation with high dispersion using at least two holographic optical elements. The multi-element diffraction grating may include a first volume phase grating that is one of the holographic optical elements. The multi-element diffraction grating may also include at least one additional volume phase grating that is the second holographic optical element. The first volume phase grating and each of the additional volume phase gratings may be positioned relative to each other such that the radiation propagates through and is diffracted by the first volume phase grating and each of the additional volume phase gratings.

High dispersion diffraction grating including multiple holographic optical elements

A diffraction grating having multiple holographic optical elements (HOEs), including a Dickson grating and at least one other volume phase grating (VPG). In typical embodiments, the multi-HOE grating is implemented to provide high dispersion, at least substantially uniform diffraction efficiency and at least substantially equal diffraction efficiencies for all polarizations across a wide range of wavelengths. The refractive index modulations of the Dickson grating's volume phase medium preferably have significantly greater spatial frequency than those of each other VPG of the multi-HOE grating. Typical embodiments of the multi-HOE grating can be manufactured at low cost with sufficiently small size and high dispersion (for both S-polarized and P-polarized radiation) to be useful in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) applications and other applications requiring high dispersion. The multi-HOE grating can be implemented as a transmissive or reflective grating.

A holographic optical element (HOE) device is mounted in wireless optical telecommunication system transceiver. The HOE device includes a developed emulsion material having an interference pattern recorded thereon, sandwiched between a pair of elements, such as a pair of clear glass plates. In operation, the HOE device uses the recorded interference pattern to diffract received light rays towards an optical processing unit of the system receiver. A transmitter unit can be positioned at least in part behind the HOE device. An opening in the emulsion material allows a light signal transmitted from the transmitter unit to be substantially unaffected by the recorded interference pattern. The transceiver can also include a spotting scope and an alignment beacon.

Transceiver for a wireless optical telecommunication system

A holographic optical element (HOE) device is mounted in a receiver unit, such as a wireless optical telecommunication system receiver. The HOE device includes a developed emulsion material having an interference pattern recorded thereon, sandwiched between a pair of elements, such as a pair of clear glass plates. In operation, the HOE device uses the recorded interference pattern to diffract incident light rays towards an optical processing unit of the system receiver. The optical processing unit includes a photodetector that detects the diffracted light rays. The system receiver can include various other components and/or can have various configurations. In one configuration, a plurality of mirrors is used to control the direction of the light rays coming from the HOE device, and a collimating optical assembly collimates these light rays. A beam splitting optical assembly can be used to split the light rays into a tracking channel and a communication channel.

System and method for using a holographic optical element in a wireless telecommunication system receiver

A visual display device is provided for delivering a generated image, preferably combinable with environment light, to the eye of a user. The device is lightweight and compact but yields a high quality image. In one embodiment, a shroud protects from stray light and holds optical elements in desired alignment. In one embodiment an image generator is masked by at least two masks to provide for a high quality image without waste. In one embodiment, a removably mounted shield or activatable device and convert the apparatus from a see-through device to an immersion device and back again. In one embodiment, the device can be comfortably mounted to the user's head while still allowing for use of conventional eyeglasses. A tracker for outputting an indication of the orientation, attitude and/or position of a head-mounted display (HMD) may be provided. The tracker can be configured so that it is incorporated in the HMD housing and/or can be easily decoupled from the HMD, so that the HMD can be used without the tracker (e.g. for watching movies). Preferably, decoupling involves unplugging a single electrical connector (such as a cable) and unfastening a mechanical connection (such as a strap). Preferably the tracker provides pass-through of signal to the HMD and, when the tracker is coupled to the HMD, only a single cable or other data link connects the HMD-tracker combination to the host computer. In one embodiment, the tracker uses magnetic sensors. In another embodiment, one or more inertial sensors, such as a rate gyro and/or accelerometers are used.

Personal visual display system

Raman spectrometer for analyzing the chemical composition of sample streams using an external cavity laser light source is disclosed. The laser provides an effective light source useful in continuously analyzing a sample stream containing petroleum products, aqueous or biological fluids, or solid slurries. The light is introduced into a bundle of optical fibers connected to a Raman sample cell. The Raman sample cell is configured to allow continuous sample flow therethrough. Scattered light from the sample cell preferably exits the optical fibers as a linear optical signal. A Raman spectrometer passes the optical signal through an excitation wavelength filter, an optical slit, and a volume holographic transmission grating with an aberration correction device before transmitting the optical signal to a charge coupled device array which converts the optical signal into a electronic signal. The electronic signal is analyzed and converted by computer into a representation of the chemical analysis of the sample stream.

The present invention eliminates the relay lens systems found in conventional helmet mounted displays (HMDs) by removing field distortions and aberrations with a contoured fiber optic faceplate placed in close proximity to a liquid crystal display (LCD) or cathode ray tube. The optical system typically consists of a spherical dielectric or holographically made collimator-combiner, a dielectric or holographically made fold mirror, and a contoured fiber optic faceplate. The fold mirror is flat, and the collimator-combiner is made by coating a spherical eye glass blank. The system is configured as a folded and tilted catadioptric projector with the novel feature being the contoured faceplate. There are no dispersive elements in the imaging assembly which means it can be completely polychromatic (full color) without the need for additional color correction optics as found in all refractive color systems. When designed for full color, highest brightness, and see through capability it must be made with two or three narrow spectral and angular sensitive coatings on the fold mirror and on the collimator-combiner. These coatings allow the use of a tilt of the collimator-combiner with respect to the fold mirror which induces a small amount of astigmatism and keystone distortion but at the same time allows image light to pass through the folded optics to the eye with a minimum of loss.

A visual display device is provided for delivering a generated image, preferably combinable with environment light, to the eye of a user. Light from an image generator such as a CRT, LED or LCD is reflected from a fold mirror away from a user's eye towards a combiner. The image is reflected from the combiner and magnified, optionally combined with light from the environment and passes back through the fold mirror towards the eye of the user. In one embodiment, an optical element such as a meniscus lens or PCX lens is used to present the user with a substantially flat focal field and/or a Fresnel lens or diffractive optical element is used to aim rays from the image to the field curvature corrective lens in order to maintain maximum contrast.

The intensified visual display relates to visual displays which combine generated images with the view of the environment surrounding a user and transmit such combined visual information to the eye position of the user. A fold mirror (1) frequently utilized in such displays reflects only a fraction of the light striking it and, similarly, transmits only a different fraction of the light reaching it. The fold mirror (1) will reflect a maximum amount of light when such light is S polarized and transmit a maximum amount of light when the light is P polarized. If the image generator produces S polarized light, one quarter-wave plate (3) is used to assure that image light to be reflected by the fold mirror (1) is S polarized while image light to be transmitted through the fold mirror (1) is P polarized. If the image generator produces P polarized light, a first quarter-wave plate (31) and a second quarter-wave plate (32) are employed.
