Apparatus and methods are disclosed for securing a component, such as a sealing element, to a tubular member, such as a mandrel, of a downhole tool. In at least one example, a retaining ring is used to secure the component to a mandrel. The retaining ring is secured to the mandrel with a plurality of discrete retention segments disposed within a channel at least partially defined by an internal groove on the retaining ring and an external groove on the mandrel. The retention segments are individually insertable into the channel through an access opening on the retaining ring. A compression spring may be provided in the channel to provide compressive engagement of the retention segments. Various closure configurations are also disclosed for closing the access opening once the retention segments have been inserted.

Provided is a method for setting a downhole tool, and a downhole tool, and a well system employing the same. The method, in at least one aspect, includes positioning a downhole tool within a wellbore, the downhole tool including expandable metal configured to expand in response to hydrolysis, and subjecting the expandable metal to a wellbore fluid to expand the expandable metal into contact with one or more surfaces. The method, in at least one aspect, further includes applying a voltage to the expandable metal while the expandable metal is being subjected to the wellbore fluid.

A frac sleeve system includes a well casing with a tubular wall having a frac port defined therethrough for hydraulic fracturing. A sleeve within the well casing includes a sleeve body. The sleeve is mounted for axial movement relative to the tubular wall of the well casing among three positions including: a closed position in which the sleeve body blocks the frac port, a frac position in which the sleeve body clears the frac port so the frac port is open for hydraulic fracturing therethrough, and a production position in which the sleeve at least partially blocks the frac port.

Provided is a downhole zonal isolation assembly. The downhole zonal isolation assembly, in accordance with one aspect, includes a rotating fracturing valve positionable within wellbore casing proximate a fracturing zone of interest. The downhole zonal isolation assembly, according to this aspect, further includes a rotating fracturing valve actuator coupled to the rotating fracturing valve, and rotating fracturing valve electronics coupled to the rotating fracturing valve actuator, the rotating fracturing valve electronics operable to activate the rotating fracturing valve actuator to move the rotating fracturing valve from a first wellbore casing open position to a second wellbore casing closed position.

A permanent magnet electric generator for use in downhole applications has a rotor element rotatable about an axis, extending in a radial direction generally perpendicular to the axis and one or more permanent magnets attached to the rotor for generating magnetic fields. A stator element also extends in a radial direction generally perpendicular to the axis. A shaft is connected to the rotor and rotatable about the axis, the shaft extends through the stator. The linear distance along the shaft between the rotor and stator defines a gap that is variable and resistant to debris buildup.

Provided is a filter plug, a well system, and a method for fracturing a well system. The filter plug, in one aspect, includes a filtration skeleton. The filter plug according to this aspect further includes a degradable material in contact with the filtration skeleton, the filtration skeleton and degradable material configured to lodge within a port in a wellbore, and thus substantially plug the port when the degradable material remains intact with the filtration skeleton and allow the filtration skeleton to filter particulate matter as fluid passes there through when the degradable material no longer remains intact with the filtration skeleton.

A magnetic coupling system and a method of balancing a magnetic coupler are provided. The magnetic coupling system includes a follower magnet magnetically coupled to a drive magnet, and a magnetic balancing component located to a side of the follower magnet. Movement of the drive magnet induces corresponding movement of the follower magnet. The magnetic balancing component and the drive magnet exert attractive magnetic forces on the follower magnet in opposite directions.

Fluid flow control devices and methods to reduce overspeed of a fluid flow control device are presented. A fluid flow control device includes a port and a rotatable component that rotates about an axis in response to fluid flow from the port. The fluid flow control device also includes a mechanical component disposed on the rotatable component and configured to reduce rotational speed of the rotatable component.

Provided, in one aspect, is a downhole torque limiter, comprising a tubular housing; a pipe positioned within the tubular housing; one or more clutch mechanisms positioned between the pipe and the tubular housing, the one or more clutch mechanisms configured to move between a engaged state to fix the tubular housing relative to the pipe and a disengaged state to allow with the tubular housing to rotate relative to the pipe; and a fluid control system coupled with an exterior of the one or more clutch mechanisms, the fluid control system configured to allow the one or more clutch mechanisms to move from the engaged state to the disengaged state based upon sensing movement of the pipe relative to the tubular housing.

Downhole torque limiter

Embodiments for controlling flow rates within a well system are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a first flow control configuration is determined including determining flow profiles for a plurality of zones each including at least one flow control device. Contaminant intake classifications associated with one or more of the zones are generated based on the first flow control configuration and a first contaminant level detected for a combined flow comprising inflow from the zones. A second flow control configuration for the zones is generated based on the contaminant intake classifications.

Fluid flow control devices and downhole floats are presented. A fluid flow control device includes a port and a rotatable component that rotates about an axis in response to fluid flow from the port. The fluid flow control device also includes an outlet port that provides a fluid passageway out of the rotatable component. The fluid flow control device further includes a float positioned within the rotatable component, where the float is shiftable from an open position to a closed position, and where the float restricts fluid flow through the outlet port while the float is in the closed position.

A system includes an electric submersible pump (ESP) configured for pumping fluid through a flow path. An autonomous inflow control device (AICD) is included in fluid communication with the flow path to separate one of gas or liquid out of the flow path. A method includes producing liquid from a wellbore using an electric submersible pump (ESP) in the wellbore. The method includes bypassing gas from a headspace the wellbore using an autonomous inflow control device (AICD) to prevent gas locking the ESP.

The disclosure is directed to a well system environment communication system comprising of an acoustic communicator capable of communicating encoded data with a first wireless transceiver through a fluid medium and the first wireless transceiver capable of communicating encoded data with a second transceiver through a non-fluid medium. In one example, an acoustic communicator is communicatively coupled with a downhole tool allowing the downhole tool to communicate indirectly with a well system controller. In another aspect of the disclosure, a method is described wherein an acoustic communicator located in a wellbore can encode data from a downhole tool and communicate the data through a fluid medium to a first wireless transceiver and the first wireless transceiver can communicate with a second transceiver through a non-fluid medium.

Systems and methods for wireless downhole positioning are provided. The method can include synchronizing a first clock with a second clock, wherein the first clock is disposed in a first transmitter, wherein the first transmitter is disposed at a known location, and wherein the second clock is disposed in a downhole tool. The method can further include disposing the downhole tool into a wellbore, wherein the downhole tool comprises a first receiver; transmitting a first wireless signal from the first transmitter along the wellbore at first time; receiving the first wireless signal via the first receiver at a second time; determining a first elapsed time between the first time and the second time; and determining a first downhole position of the downhole tool based on the first elapsed time.
