A spectrographic system includes a space-borne spectrometer in communication with a ground-based processor. The space-borne spectrometer may include an interferometer, a detector array downstream from the interferometer, and a spectrometer controller configured to cooperate with the detector array to collect Fourier Transform Spectral (FTS) data, generate Principle Component Analysis (PCA) scores from the collected FTS data, generate an approximate interferogram based upon the PCA scores and the collected FTS data, generate residuals based upon the approximate interferogram, and generate compressed FTS data based upon the PCA scores and residuals to be sent to the ground-based processor.

An airborne scanning instrument may include a scanning mirror configured to be carried by an airborne platform and having a major reflective surface to define a scanning path directed toward Earth. The airborne scanning instrument may include a shaft configured to rotate the scanning mirror about a shaft axis. The major reflective surface of the scanning mirror may be tilted at a first angle from the shaft axis, and the shaft axis may be tilted at a second angle relative to horizontal. The airborne scanning instrument may include a detector aligned with the scanning mirror to define a detector path therewith.

Image navigation of an input image by edge registration proceeds by generating a reference image kernel in which edges of a reference image are embraced by borders. Image intensities of the reference image kernel internal to the borders increase with decreasing distance from the edges. A registration score is computed by cross-correlating the image intensities of the reference image kernel with image intensities in the input image. A feature exists in the input image when the registration score meets a registration criterion.

A method of lossless image data compression including the steps of: (a) receiving an image; (b) forming a residual image by differencing adjacent samples of the received image; (c) forming multiple bitplanes directly from the residual image; (d) predicting polarities of data values of the residual image; (e) determining incorrectly predicted polarities and storing the incorrectly predicted polarities in a table; (f) encoding each of the bitplanes and the incorrectly predicted polarities of the table to form a compressed image, and (g) transmitting both the encoded bitplanes and the encoded incorrectly predicted polarities of the table.
