This disclosure teaches a process and machine particularly suited for dyeing at a low liquid to goods ratio synthetic fibers, such as polyesters, orlon, and nylon, or blends of such with cotton, where further there are minimal risks of thermal shock, cracking, or bruising during cool down. The disclosed apparatus has a tub enclosing the dye bath, spaced air inlet and outlet openings for the tub, and a blower for forcing air through these openings and in close proximity to the dye bath and its surface. This forced venting of the dye bath enclosure with air effectively cools the dye bath quickly but uniformly during the cool down phase of the dye cycle. Preferably, dampers at the inlet and outlet openings can be closed to minimize the unwanted escape of vapors from the dye bath during the heat up and/or boil phases of the dye cycle; and further can be opened controlled amounts for varying the volume of airflow over the dye bath during cool down. The blower is preferably located in the system downstream of the outlet opening to create a negative pressure over the dye bath itself, which firstly reduces the flash or boil temperature of the dye bath for fast dissipation of heat from the bath, and secondly minimizes leakage of vapors from the apparatus to the nearby ambient.

Method for vapor phase treating garments

This invention teaches a compression extractor device for removing excess water from laundered goods. The device has one or more tubs, each having pervious sides and an open top and an open bottom, and frame structure that supports the tub(s) for movement relative to the frame between and to spaced load, extract, and unload operating stations. There is structure for registering and holding the tub(s) at the respective stations, particularly the extract station. There is frame clearance above the open tub top at the load station and frame clearance below the open tub bottom at the unload station, although a frame base plate underlies and closes the open tub bottom at and between the load station and the extract station. The wet goods are thus adapted to be loaded into the open tub top at the load station and the extracted goods are adapted to be ejected from the open tub bottom at the unload station. Plunger means are associated with each operating station, and each is adapted to be moved from above the open tub top into the tub and downwardly against the goods in the tub. This action compacts the wet goods into the tub at the load station, squeezes with great force the wet goods at the extract station to force excess water from the goods for escape out the pervious tub sides and onto the base plate, and ejects the extracted cake of goods at the unload station.

Compression extractor device for laundry goods

The dryer under consideration has a gas burner located within a sheet metal housing, and passageways in and through the housing direct ambient air for combustion with fuel within the housing and subsequent discharge of the combined combustion gases through the inlet opening into the drum chamber. The exhaust opening from the drum chamber is ducted to the outside atmosphere but it is also ducted at a tee junction to a reclaimer housing that directs this diverted gas in heat exchange relation past the burner housing and to the drum chamber. Thus, a portion of such exhausted gases is reused, preferrably the reused gas should constitute approximately 50 to 70 percent of the total volume of gas used, and it is heated only by heat exchange contact with the burner housing; while the remainder of the drying gases comprises the ambient air heated by combustion in the burner with the gaseous fuel and is thus much hotter. The orientation of the inlet openings to the drum chamber for the combustion and recycled gases provides that the hotter combustion gases be discharged on the upstream side of the cooler recycled gases, as referenced by the direction of rotation of the dryer drum and its tangential effect pass the inlet openings; and these openings are immediately adjacent one another.
