The present invention relates to anaerobically curable compositions, methods of preparation and methods of use that provide enhanced physical properties when cured in contact with untreated inactive surfaces. The compositions which include isobornyl acrylate, isobornyl methacrylate or combinations thereof in combination with a multi(meth)acrylate and a free-radical initiator, may be used without the addition of a transition metal catalyst.

Anaerobic adhesive compositions curable on inactive surfaces

An anaerobic adhesive composition having enhanced toughness and resistance to crack propagation, particularly subsequent to thermal exposure, comprising a combination of three monomers consisting of (a) at least one (meth) acrylate monomer, (b) at least one (meth)acrylate-terminated urethane modified acrylonitrile/butadiene prepolymer, and (c) at least one (meth)acrylate-terminated acrylic/polyisocyanate adduct.

Anaerobic compositions with enhanced toughness and crack resistance

The present invention provides anaerobic adhesive compositions, reaction products of which demonstrate controlled-strength at ambient temperature conditions and enhanced resistance to thermal degradation at elevated temperature conditions. The compositions are (meth)acrylate- and/or polyorganosiloxane-based and may include one or more of a variety of other components, such as certain coreactants, a maleimide component, a diluent component reactive at elevated temperature conditions, mono- or poly-hydroxyalkane components, and other components.

High temperature, controlled strength anaerobic compositions curable under ambient environmental conditions

A curable composition, having utility for threadlocking engageable members of a threaded mechanical fastener, comprising: a reactive silicone (meth)acrylate emulsified in an aqueous medium, optionally further comprising a polymerizable non-silicone (meth)acrylate monomer or oligomer; and a microencapsulated peroxy initiator which is initiatingly effective for cure of the reactive silicone (meth)acrylate. The curable composition may be usefully employed for adhesively bonding engageable structural parts, by applying the aqueous emulsion of the reactive silicone (meth)acrylate, containing a microencapsulated peroxy initiator, to at least a portion of an engagement surface of a matable part which is matably engageable with a complimentary engagement structure, to yield an emulsion-coated engagement surface, drying the emulsion-coated engagement surface to form a dried coating thereon; and thereafter engaging the surface having the dried coating thereon, with the complimentary engagement structure, to release the microencapsulated peroxy initiator and bond the matable part and complimentary engagement structure.

Preapplied silicone threadlocker and sealant

A primer activator composition useful in cleaning and activating metallic surfaces in preparation for use with an anaerobic adhesive. The composition contains a non-combustible, non-ozone depleting, liquid polyfluoroalkane having at least one carbon-hydrogen bond, preferably a C.sub.4-10 dihydro- or trihydro-polyfluoroalkane; an alkanol which is capable of forming an azeotropic mixture with the polyfluoroalkane, preferably a C.sub.1-6 alkanol, such as n-butanol; a transition metal compound, preferably a copper compound; and optionally, an amine co-activator.

Primer activator composition for anaerobic adhesives

Anaerobically curable silicones

An adhesive composition capable of post-cure expansion comprising a multifunctional (meth)acrylate and a maleimide capable of effectuating expansion upon post-cure. A homogeneous mixture of a monomer and maleimide are subjected to a first cure heat stage wherein a rigid partially-cured plastic is formed and a post-cure heart stage to effectuate permanent expansion of the cured adhesive composition.

An adhesive composition capable of post-cure expansion comprising a multifunctional methacrylate and a maleimide capable of effectuating expansion upon post-cure. A homogeneous mixture of a monomer and maleimide are subjected to a first cure heat stage wherein a rigid partially-cured plastic is formed and a post-cure heat stage to effectuate permanent expansion of the cured adhesive composition.

Curable acrylate ester compositions having as an accelerator for the polymerization a hydrazine derivative of the formula R.sup.1 --HN--NH--CO--R.sup.2. Typical of the monomers are the polyalkyleneglycol dimethacrylates and the so-called urethane acrylates. Polymerization is preferably initiated by a peroxy compound such as cumene hydroperoxide, such a composition having anaerobic curing characteristics.

Curable acrylate ester compositions having as an accelerator for the polymerization a hydrazine derivative of the formula R.sup.1 --HN--NH--CO--R.sup.2. Typical of the monomers are the polyalkylene-glycol dimethacrylates and the so-called urethane acrylates. Polymerization is preferably initiated by a peroxy compound such as cumene hydroperoxide, such a composition having anaerobic curing characteristics.

Curable acrylate ester compositions having as an accelerator for the polymerization a hydrazine derivative of the formula R.sup.1 --HN--NH--CO--R.sup.2 and as a co-accelerator, an acid having a pK.sub.a of less than about 6. The compositions may optionally be formulated as two-part compositions with the non-ester-containing part being applied as a primer. Polymerization is preferably initiated by a peroxy compound such as cumene hydroperoxide, such a composition having anaerobic curing characteristics.
