Mixed esters of pentaerythritol and the like with at least two different 3-alkylthiopropionic acids are provided. Each acid from which the ester is prepared has a different alkyl group. This facilitates tailoring the mixed ester for use as a stabilizer which is especially compatible with a particular polymer resin material. Preferably, each 3-alkylthiopropionic acid is prepared by a direct addition reaction between an alkylmercaptan and acrylic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof, the reaction being carried out by heating the reactants in the presence of an aqueous alkaline solution.

Mixed s-alkylthiopropionic acid esters and polymers stabilized therewith

3-alkylthiopropionic acids are provided which are a direct addition reaction product of an alkylmercaptan and acrylic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof, the reaction being carried out by heating the reactants in the presence of an aqueous alkaline solution having a pH of at least about 11. The acids can be esterified with pentaerythritol in order to form tetraesters which are especially useful as stabilizers for polymer resins and polymers.

S-alkylthiopropionic acids and derivatives

3-alkylthiopropionic acids which are esterified with pentaerythritol are provided. The esters are solvent refined with especially effective organic solvent blends. Tetraesters thus processed are especially useful as stabilizers for polymer resins and polymers.

Alkylthiopropionic pentaerythritol esters and solvent refining thereof

A process for preparing a 2-aralkyl-5,5-dialkyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinan-2-one by heating a 2-aralkyloxy-5,5-dialkyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinane such as the novel 2-benzyloxy-5,5-dimethyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinane, with a catalytic quantity of an aralkyl halide. The aralkyl halide can be recovered and recycled.
